Fall 2002 Internet2 Member Meeting Remote Instrumentation WG T. Charles Yun Program Manager October 2002
Introduction Outline • Cross Disciplinary Remote Instrumentation Working Group • Introduction • Internet2 • T. Charles Yun <tcyun@internet2.edu> • Last Year’s BOF Session • WG Charter • Initial Tasks • Introduce speakers Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Introduction Summary of past work • BOF session in Arlington earlier this year • Introduced concept of full working group and need for charter. • Copies of draft of WG Charter available as handouts or online: http://www.internet2.edu/remote Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Introduction Numerous communities and research fields are using remote instruments to assist their work as advanced networks allow much more sophisticated devices to be used. Groups are separately learning to use and optimize these instruments but, to date, have not effectively shared their experience and knowledge. The Cross-Disciplinary Remote Instrumentation Working Group's primary goal is to provide a forum through which these discussions can take place. Mission The proposed mission of the Remote Instrumentation Working Group is to: 1. Establish a community who create and use remote instruments. 2. Provide a forum through which knowledge can be shared. 3. Identify areas in which the community at large can benefit from shared work. Goals- Technical - Survey and document existing remote instrument usage. Document locations, existing connectivity, type of equipment, usage, lessons learned, accessibility, etc. - Document lessons learned, hardware, cooperative vendors (hardware and software), etc. - Identify performance parameters and metrics (e.g., TCP/IP, E2E, latency wrt specific instruments, etc.) Goals- Community - Create opportunities through which researchers can discuss relevant topics - Document how remote instruments are currently being used. - Define "remote instrumentation" and sub-fields as useful to the working group. - How are instruments shared Introduction Working Group Charter (2/2) Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Introduction First Steps • Loose organization • Approve charter • Please consider items to add to the charter for the next meeting • Identify activities and working group chair • Agree to meet at the next Member Meeting • Additional information: • http://www.internet2.edu/remote/ • remote@internet2.edu Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Introduction Speakers • Erik Hofer • University of Michigan • Social Ramifications • Bob Bradford • NASA Marshall Space Flight Center • ISS Instrumentation • Dan Wilson • University of California, Davis • NEES & Centrifuges Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Introduction Activities for Next Meting • Individuals interested in investigating social ramifications • Ask Erik Hofer to lead discussions on mailing list • List types of remote instruments that are currently being used • Instruments • Tools • Identify challenges faced by community • Large data volumes • Target /requirements for throughput, latency, loss, environmentals • What remote instruments can be used by the K-12 community Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
Last Items • Attendee list • Indicate if you want to be added to the remote instrumentation mailing list Internet 2 Remoe Instrumentation Working Group
