  3. Whatisapatent, and whywouldyouneed one? A patent is a right granted by the government to an inventor that protects the invention from being used by other people. It gives the inventor the right to stop others from making, using, or selling the invention for a certain period of time. Different countries have different types of patent systems. A copyright is a copyright is a measure of protection the copyright office gives to original works of authorship. These works remain protected until the copyright expires. Copyrighted works are protected by copyright laws wherever they are published or otherwise protected. (For more on the different types of copyrights, see our article: Copyright Basics.)

  4. Whattypeofpatentshouldyou applyfor? There are many different types of patents, all with different degrees of protection in different countries. There’s a utility patent, which protects the invention itself and its uses. There’s a design patent, which protects the way the product looks. And there’s a plant patent, which protects certain types of plants. Patents vary enormously in terms of what protection is available depending on the type of patent granted, which type of patent protection you want, and many other things. (In Magic: The Gathering, you can think of a patent as protecting your “Blue Elemental” ability.) And for this reason, choosing a patent strategy for a small business is not straightforward.

  5. Howdoyoufilean applicationforapatent? Before you start the process of applying for a patent, it’s important to know what a patent is and what it covers. A patent gives an inventor exclusive rights to produce, market, and sell an invention for a certain period of time, usually 20 years.A copyright protects original works of authorship, and a trademark gives you trademark rights on products and services. As a small business, you may believe that product and service design is not a valuable form of intellectual property. However, you may have valuable designs or concepts that could be protected by a patent. Using these types of design, terminology, or ideas to protect your business could prove lucrative once you’ve started your business. For know more visit: https://www.albright-ip.co.uk/patent-idea/
