  1. Ions in SPSStatus report D.Manglunki, BE/OP M.E.Angoletta, J.Axensalva, H.Bartosik, M.Bodendorfer, T.Bohl, C.Carli, S.Cettour Cave, H.Damerau, I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Findlay, S.Hancock, J.Jowett, D.Küchler, Y.Papaphillipou, S.Pasinelli, B.Vandorpe, U.Wehrle, … IEFC October 19th, 2012

  2. Agenda • Fragmented Pb for NA61’s Be run • Under control • p and Pb beams for LHC’s p-Pb • Q20 or Q26? • Ar and Xe runs after LS1 • Cables for interlock • Issue of water availability in 2013 • Proposal for schedule allowing to complete Ar & Xeprogrammes by mid-2016 D.Manglunki – IEFC – Ions in SPS

  3. Fragmented Pb for NA61’s Be run • 3 momenta: 13, 20, 30AGeV/c • Equivalent proton momenta 36, 55, 80GeV/c • 4, 3, or 2 injections • Scheduled from 03/12/12 to 17/12/12 then from 07/01/13 to 11/02/13 • Cycles are ready • High duty cycle (>30%): sole SPS user apart from • LHC fillings • HiRadMat • Proton MDs D.Manglunki – IEFC – Ions in SPS

  4. p and Pb beams for LHC’s p-Pb • 200ns or 100ns? • 200ns preferred (?) but 100ns ready too from PS • Q20 or Q26? • First MD needed to make sure ions can be injected with 3 MKP generators on Q20 (rise time <200ns) • If not • Either switch to Q26 for p+ and ions • Or go back to smaller number of bunches/batch(longer filling time for p+) • Note: 3x8 excludes filling schemes with 2,4,6 bunches D.Manglunki – IEFC – Ions in SPS

  8. Ar and Xe runs after LS1: [Reminder] Cables for interlock • Primary beam to North area, collimators open • Need to prevent extraction of high intensity (p+) beam • Interlock designed: 2 BCTs inhibiting MST&MSE if I>2e11 • Needs cables between • BA5 (BCTs & comprators) • BA3 (CCR, GS/ASE automats) • BA2 (MST/MSE power supplies) • EN & TE DHs have committed about those cables

  9. Ar and Xe runs after LS1: water in 2013 • Originally 2x13 weeks in 2013 for Ar & Xe tests in ECR • LHC p-Pb moved to January/February 2013 • 6 months needed for water maintenance • Only Ar will be possible, from mid-September to early December 2013 • Issue of Linac4 test stand for January-June 2013

  10. Ar and Xe runs after LS1: proposal • September-December 2013 (or March-June 2013?): Ar in ECR • June-December 2014: commission Ar in LEIR, PS, SPS • February-March 2015: Ar run for NA61 in SPS North Area • April 2015: Linac3 maintenance • May 2015: switch ECR to Xe • May-July 2015: Xe setup in  ECR • August 2015: Switch ECR to Pb • August-October 2015: RecommissionPb in injectors • November-December 2015: LHC Pb-Pb run • Xmas break+ Jan-feb 2016: Linac 3 maintenance • March 2016: switch ECR to Xe • March-May 2016: commission Xe in LEIR, PS, SPS • June-July 2016: Xe run for NA61 in SPS North Area • August 2016: Switch ECR to Pb • August-October 2016: RecommissionPb in injectors • November-December 2016: LHC Pb-Pb run

  11. Ar and Xe runs after LS1 • Advantages • Avoid further delays and complete Xe by mid-2016 • Ion run allows cooldown before resuming works in North Area in April 2015 • Hypotheses • SPS fixed target p+ run in late 2014
