  1. KernelWebinar by Mike “Salty Kernel” Menninger mikemenn13@gmail.com Council Operations Kernel, Foothills District Kernel

  2. Documents That Will Help • Visit the Council Popcorn page for helpful documents • http://www.atlantabsa.org/pocporn(each below is a link to a document on the webpage above) • 2013 Popcorn Calendar • Unit Popcorn Sales Job Descriptions • Use this to form your team. It lists 5 “Captain” positions and their duties. It’s easier to ask someone when they know exactly what they’ll be doing. • Sample Show-N-Sell Tally Sheet • Used for checking out popcorn/money for Show-N-Sell. • Change to fit your popcorn varieties. • Quantity per Case / Wholesale Prices • Scout Sales Tracking • Complicated Excel spreadsheet for tracking Cub Scout sales. Double check work. Use at own risk. 

  3. Subjects of this Powerpoint • Three Ways to Sell Popcorn • Show-N-Sell • Take Order • Online • Tracking Sales • Trail’s End Website • Setting Up an Account • Ordering Popcorn • Ordering Prizes • Overage/Underage Popcorn • Sell/Buy from other units • Wholesale • Still have too much • Your Popcorn Team

  4. Your unit (Pack, Troop, etc.) is a Popcorn Store... without a storefront.Stores buy at wholesale and sell at Retail. • Scouts are the salesmen on commission. For Packs, Den Leaders are like the managers. • What’s a popcorn store need? • Atlanta Area Council gives you popcorn. You pay for it later. • Up first, Show-N-Sell. Popcorn!

  5. Show-N-Sell Popcorn What is Show-N-Sell?Selling at store fronts.

  6. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 1 Setup Locations, Date and Time Suggest at least 2 for each den, patrol, etc. Certainly Sure Can we sell popcorn in front of your store? Please do Of course Pack 123 Kernel Our pleasure + Other Stores + Chartered Org Yes! No, sorry.

  7. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 2a With Comm., decide how much & what kinds to order. This might be hardest decision. Use past sales, unit budget, Scout goals, etc. Let’s get $1000 (retail) worth of popcorn. We can sell more than that! Okay Oof, that’s too much. Pack Committee Pack 123 Kernel

  8. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 2b Decide where to store popcorn. Trailerwatch for heat Garage or Basement Storagewatch for heat Chartered Org

  9. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 3 Order Show-N-Sell Popcorn by Aug 28. Pack 123 Kernel $1000 of popcorn coming right up! (this is so easy)

  10. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 4 Pickup ordered popcorn Sep 14. $1000 worth of Popcorn (retail)

  11. Show-N-Sell Popcorn Step 5 Execute the Sell at your locations! Collect money $$$!

  12. Show-N-Sell Popcorn • Logistics & Issues of Show-N-Sell Popcorn • Ordering cases, not bags/tins • 1, 6, 8 or 12 per Case (more later) • Order a variety, but not every flavor. That’s a lot of inventory to try and sell everything at a store. • Make sure you can access the storage throughout sales period • You will not sell all popcorn. (more later) • Method for tracking popcorn/cash (next slide)

  13. Show-N-Sell Popcorn: Sample Tally Sheet You can download this to modify from the Council Popcorn website.

  14. Take Order Popcorn What is Take Order? Door-to-door, friends, family, etc.TAKE an ORDER for popcorn Deliver later. Makes the most money.

  15. Take Order Popcorn Step 1 Decide on ... - Kick Off Date: Pack Mtg, Troop Mtg, Special Mtg, etc. - Unit Prizes / Awards (not from Trail’s End) Pie in Cubmaster’s Face Top Seller Prize Awards? Local Business Freebies Top Den/Patrol Prize Pack Committee Pack 123 Kernel Door Prizes Refund Dues Free Overnight Trip

  16. Take Order Popcorn A Note on Unit Prizes / Awards It is possible for a Scout to sell enough popcorn he won’t have to pay for anything in scouting. We suggest you structure it so the more a particular Scout earns, the less that particular Scout will pay for trips, banquets, uniform, dues, camping, equipment, etc. It’s their money. And parents will be more interested when it affects their wallet. (Troops for the most part already do this. This is directed at Packs.) Yes, some of the money should stay with the unit to pay for unit costs. But many units give a half or more back to the scout instead of lumping all Scout earnings into one account. This does require more tracking, but is rewarding (and more fair) to the family that works hard to sell. This isn’t a Council mandate so it’s up to you to decide.

  17. Take Order Popcorn Step 2 Have an Awesome Kickoff! Get kids excited! At minimum ... - Hand out & explain popcorn forms - Demonstrate how to (and how not to) sell door-to-door - Explain flavors & costs (not in detail, don’t bore them) - Explain rewards / incentives / unit awards Yes! Are you ready to sell some popcorn?!? Pack 123 Kernel

  18. Take Order Popcorn Step 3 Scouts get selling. Collect money at Point-of-Sale (if possible) in this order: 1. Cash or Check 2. Credit Card (Square, Paypal, etc.) 3. Pay Later

  19. Take Order Popcorn Readers and Accounts are Free. Squaresquareup.com 2.75% per swipe Paypal paypal.com 2.70% per swipe Use these to capture credit card sales. Great for Show-N-Sell.Many units had success using them. Yes, you lose a little bit in charges, but that beats losing the sale all together.

  20. Take Order Popcorn Step 3 Suggestion: Checks made out to parents. At turn in, parents write one check on their account to pack. Helps Treasurer from dealing with several hundred checks and lots of cash. Put Scout’s name on check.

  21. Take Order Popcorn Step 3 Alternative: Take Show-N-Sell door to door. Many have had success in having the corn right there at the door. Good for planned neighborhood canvassing by a den, pack or patrol.

  22. Take Order Popcorn • Step 4: Collect money & orders • At least 1 week before due (Oct 16): Parents are notorious for taking their time and missing deadlines. • Leave forms with Scouts so they can deliver later • Collect 1 check from parents • Use a spreadsheet Pack 123 Kernel

  23. Take Order Popcorn Step 5. Tabulate how much popcorn you need to order. a. Take total Sold Door-to-Door b. –subtract left over from Show-N-Sell c. = Equals Total you need to order d.  Round up to Container size (maybe) Door to Door = 40 Caramel Corn Leftover Show-n-Sell = - 10 Caramel Corn Need = 30 Caramel Bags BUT there are 12 bags to a container. Round up... Order for Take Order “3 Caramel Containers” = (or trade with another unit ... more later)

  24. Take Order Popcorn Step 6 Order Popcorn at Trail’s End Websiteby Oct 16. Pack 123 Kernel $10,000 of popcorn coming right up! $10,000 (retail) Ordering(this is a little harder)

  25. Take Order Popcorn Step 7 Pickup ordered popcornon Nov 9.

  26. Take Order Popcorn Step 8: Give popcorn to Scouts to deliver - Usually on same day as pickup, step 7 - This is the reason they keep forms

  27. Take Order Popcorn Step 9 Turn in Money & Top Seller Forms by Dec 5.2nd Qualification for extra 5%. $$$$$ to

  28. Trail’s End Ordering Donations • Flat donations... • First: Apply to Military Popcorn • Either by individual scout or by unit • Then anything < $30 is donation to unit • ex: If have $90, buy $50 & $30 Military. $10 to unit. • Note: Still apply ALL donations to Scout’s prize level

  29. So, how did you make money? • Remember, you’re a popcorn store. • You’re selling popcorn at RETAIL cost • The Council bills you at WHOLESALE cost • Your Unit keeps the difference. • Rest goes to Council & Trail’s End • Council pays you back 5% if attend Kick Off and pay by Dec 5.

  30. So, how did you make money? Example ... You order $3,000 (retail) for Show-n-Sell You order $7,000 (retail) for Take Order If sell all, $10,000 in unit’s bank account. In November, Council bills you at 70% of Retail. You’ll pay $7,000. The 30% that’s left is your profit: $3000

  31. So, how did you make money? Extra 5%? If you ... Attended an August Kick-Off AND Pay your bill by December 5 Council will mail a check in January. 5% of $10,000 = $500 $3,000 + $500 = $3,500

  32. Trail’s End Ordering There two systems which can easily be confused ... Popcorn System sell.trails-end.com Trail’s End www.trails-end.com This is the system where Scouts will advertise and try and get grandma to buy popcorn online. Leaders will see what the Scouts have sold on-line and use to add into their prize earnings This is the system where Popcorn Kernels will order Show-N-Sell and Take Order bulk orders Popcorn Kernels will start to order the Scouts’ prizes.
