  1. Movement disorders like dystonia, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy, Tourette syndrome, and tremor are complex ailments that affect both the mental and physical health of the patient. In fact, the effects are not limited to only the patient, but to all those closely associated with the patient too. Just thinking about these ailments is so terrifying, leave alone experiencing any of it! However, if you are unfortunate enough to experience the symptoms of such disorders, you need a treatment right away! There is no single test or diagnosis that can check for these diseases. So, in case of any kind of movement disorders symptoms, you may have to undergo multiple checks to come up with the final decision as to which ailment you are suffering from. And, to add to that, every individual case requires multiple kinds of in-depth clinical diagnoses. This is why you require the right physician to diagnose your problem and a qualified specialist to treat it. There are more than 600 neurological disorders that can affect the human brain and nervous system! While a neurologist can deal with the basic kinds of neurology problems, he can’t have exceptional training in all of these 600 ailments. But, a movement disorders specialist is a neurologist who, apart from his basic training and education, has received additional training for a year or two to treat neurological disorders affecting mobility. This is why when you have a movement disorders issue; you need a movement disorders specialist in Bangalore to treat you, someone like Dr. Shivam Mittal. He is a specialist who has immense experience and expertise in treating various ailments like tremor, dystonia, and Parkinson’s disease.

  2. Every patient has a different body type and brain level. Similarly, every movement disorder is of a different type and affects every individual differently. This is why it is important to find the right fit with a movement disorders specialist so that your symptoms can be managed and a problem can be treated well. Generally, there are three basic methods used to treat any movement disorder, which include medications, injections, and surgery. MEDICATIONS The initial stages of a movement disorder can be treated through medications, incorporated with basic exercises and therapies. While different disorders will require the use of different medications, the most common medications prescribed include antiepileptics, antiseizure medications, tranquilizers. While each medication is effective, they have their own side-effects too like dizziness, fatigue, weakness, nausea, vomiting, depression, light-headedness, headache, and slowed heart rate. beta-blockers, dopamine agonists, and INJECTIONS When medications don’t work, patients are injected with Botulinum toxins into their muscles to cause them to relax. With the release of this drug into the muscles, the release of neurotransmitters that cause muscle contraction is reduced. However, the effects of one injection last only for a few months, which is why patients require being re-injected every 4-6 months with the drug. The injection of this drug also has side-effects of temporary weakness and flu. SURGERY When nothing else works, there is only a last option to retort to, which is surgery. Science has come up with two kinds of surgeries to treat movement disorders – invasive and non- invasive. Deep Brain Stimulation is an invasive surgery, wherein a neurotransmitter is surgically implanted into the chest, which is connected to electrodes installed in the brain. An electrical charge is flown from the neurotransmitter into the electrodes, which blocks nerve signals that trigger abnormal movement. While effective, DBS patients may have to face side-effects of infection, bleeding, depression, loss of balance, or slurred speech. There is another non-invasive surgery that requires no incision or implantation, but instead, uses a magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasonography device to heat up and destroy the cluster of brain cells that cause the ailment. Patients have seen 50% improvement with this technique, but with the risk of killing a part of their brain, which means a permanent alteration of the body’s anatomy.
