  1. Urinary incontinence is a very bothersome ailment, which can affect the quality of your life drastically. And, this ailment is a very common part of Parkinson’s disease. More than 50% of Parkinson’s disease patients are seen to exhibit urinary symptoms like nocturia, increased urinary frequency, and urinary incontinence. Almost 50% of patients also find it difficult to empty their bladder. Out of all these symptoms, nocturia is the most common complaint, which involves the frequent need of waking up in the middle of the night to urinate. However, all these symptoms are seen generally 5 to 6 years after the onset of Parkinson’s disease. Why are urinary symptoms experienced in Parkinson’s disease? The general process of urination involves the bladder and its opening called the sphincter. The bladder expands when urine is collected in it. When 1-2 cups of urine have been collected in the bladder, it begins to have small contractions that signal the brain that the bladder is filling up. The brain has the ability to suppress these contractions until it is convenient for the person to go to the bathroom. Once the limit has reached, the brain lets the bladder contract, and then the urine is expelled out of the body through the sphincter. Because the process of urination is controlled by the brain, Parkinson’s disease patients

  2. find it difficult to hold the urine, because the brain cannot function enough to control the contractions. This causes urgency, frequency, incontinence, and repeated nighttime urination. Another opposite effect that may be seen is difficulty in expelling the urine. This occurs when the bladder is too weak to expel the urine completely, leaving some remains. This condition is a matter of concern because such accumulation of urine may cause a growth of bacteria, and thus infection. Whatever condition you face, make sure to approach a Parkinson’s disease specialist in Bangalore at the earliest! How are urinary symptoms treated? Any kind of urinary symptoms must be reported to the doctor immediately. These could include urine leakage, inability to urinate, frequent urination, urination pain, or feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. The doctor will generally provide you with drugs that will increase the dopamine levels in your brain so that the brain can function properly to control the contractions of the bladder. Antimuscarinic drugs can also be helpful. If these medications don’t help, Botulinum tox can be injected directly into the bladder muscle to help it relax. Such injections have resulted in significant improvements in the bladder column, urinary frequency, and quality of life in Parkinson’s disease patients. Approved by the FDA in 2011 as a treatment of urinary incontinence due to neurological conditions, Botulinum toxin injections are a great remedy. Other surgical treatments include invasive prostate surgery, neuromodulation, and self-catheterization. However, all these surgeries are considered only when other conservative approaches like medications and drugs fail. If you are suffering from any kind of urinary incontinence and Parkinson’s disease symptoms, don’t hesitate to approach Dr. Shivam Mittal renowned Parkinson’s disease specialist in Bangalore, who has been practicing in the field since years, after attaining immense training from the best medical institutions in the USA.
