    2. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona Mechanics of This Class Grading 25% of grade will come from written reports and memos or presentations Only a small fraction of the written grade will be based on the technical material Much of the grade is based on technical writing 75% of grade comes from case studies 1st?20% 2nd?35% 3rd?45%

    3. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona Mechanics of This Class, Cont. Two paths to getting an A for a case study Show that your requirements solve the customers problem and that your system meets the requirements If your system does not do what is described above, explain why, what went wrong and how to fix it (you want to avoid this path)

    4. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona Mechanics of This Class, Cont. Attendance is expected. If you dont show up, Ill notice and it will effect your grade Showing up late is unprofessional and can effect your grade as well No required textbook Strongly recommend Modern Optical Engineering by Warren Smith Late work will be accepted at my discretion I will only give you credit for late work under extraordinary circumstances with large deductions Im happy to make arrangements when you come to me far enough in advance

    6. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona Tentative Schedule Meeting this Friday for lecture in rm. 747 Camera check Friday the 22nd in rm. 560 1st case study Assigned 1/27 Due 2/12 2nd case study Assigned 2/15 Due 3/12 3rd case study Assigned 3/22 Due 5/3 or 5/5

    7. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona What Is Systems Engineering? Something that is left to the end of a design? A bunch of flow charts and diagrams? A process that is imposed by managers who dont understand engineering? A tool for harassing students? A discipline for people who want to be engineers, but dont have the technical knowledge?

    8. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona What Is It Really An interdisciplinary approach encompassing the entire technical effort to evolve and verify an integrated and life-cycle balanced set of system, people, product and process solutions that satisfy customer needs. Systems engineering encompasses (a) the technical efforts related to the development, manufacturing, verification, deployment, operations, support, disposal of, and user training for, system products and processes; (b) the definition and management of the system configuration; (c) the translation of the system definition into work breakdown structures; and (d) development of information for management decision making. From Systems Engineering and Analysis, 3rd Ed. By Blanchard and Fabrycky

    9. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona What We Will Focus On Get you to think about things as a system Do you ever do just a lens design? Define requirements Get you to be able to think about what sub-systems are required The sub-system requirements come from the system requirements Provide a process that you can use as a starting point

    10. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona What We Wont Be Doing We will not cover how to design things as complicated as a commercial airplane or a probe sent to another planet One specific tool for systems engineering

    11. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona What I Want You To Get Out Of This Class Learn by doing Create an environment that is more like industry Experience solving problems Ones that are ill defined Theres not just one answer Ones that are relevant to the real world Think about things while youre in the design phase What will the hardware look like? How will you put it together? How will you test it? How will it be maintained?

    12. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona Process When you look at systems engineering text books, you see lots of flow charts and diagrams It is easy to gloss over these and ignore them They have some valuable concepts in them if you look

    13. OPTI 524A/424A College of Optics The University of Arizona The Waterfall Process Model
