  1. Modelação da PPL e do balanço de C dos ecossistemas florestais portugueses a diferentes escalas Modelling NPP and C balance of Portuguese forest ecosystems at different scales Projecto PTDC/AGR-CFL/69733/2006

  2. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: • To develop a model for generalized use for NPP estimation and C budget assessment in the Portuguese production forest (eucalyptus and pine) • SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: • Testing and analysis of three process-based models: 3PG, CASA and FOREST-BGC • Comparison will be made at different scales: • Permanent plot / trial • Management unit • Country

  3. TASK 1: • Planning, coordination and dissemination • Task coordinator: • Margarida Tomé (MT/ISA) • Deliverables: • Kick off meeting (month 1) • Progress (months 12, 24) and final (month 36) reports • Project website updated every 6 months (months 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36) • International workshop (month 34 – September 2010)

  4. TASK 2: • Test site selection and characterization • Task coordinator: • Paula Soares (PS/ISA) • Deliverables: • Selection and characterization of test sites (month 2) • Database structure (month 3) • Biometric data for all the selected sites included in the database (month 8) • Climate data for all the meteorological stations selected included in the database (month 12) • Physiological and micro-meteorological data available included in the database (month 12)

  5. TASK 3: • Carbon fluxes data • Task coordinator: • Gabriel Pita (GP/IST) • Deliverables: • Data base with carbon fluxes measurements previous to 2007 (month 6) • Carbon fluxes data for 2007 included in the database (month 18) • Carbon fluxes data for 2008 included in the database (month 30)

  6. TASK 4: • Remote sensing data and associated climate datasets • Task coordinator: • Nuno Carvalhais (IMAR) • Deliverables: • Selection of the sites that will be used for NPP estimation based on LAI estimation from EO and also of the spatial resolution to be used for each site (month 2) • Data base with remote sensing data and associated climate datasets (month 24)

  7. TASK 5 (1/2): • Model analysis, calibration and adaptation to the species and to PT conditions • Task coordinator: • José Tomé (JT/ISA) • Deliverables: • Working paper with the comparison of the three models focusing mainly the model weaknesses (month 12) • List of the parameters from each model that will be modified after the literature search and identification of the need to do additional measurements (month 12) • Report with the description of the methodologies that will be used for the initialization of each model in each of the test sites (month 12)

  8. TASK 5 (2/2): • Deliverables (continuação): • Working paper (joint with tasks 6 and 7) analyzing the results of the validations and proposing model modifications if necessary (month 24) • Improved CASA model (month 30) • Improved FOREST-BGC model (month 30) • Improved 3PG model (month 30)

  9. TASK 6: • Model validation against permanent plot and forest inventory data • Task coordinator: • Domingos Lopes (DL/UTAD) • Deliverables: • Report on the results of model validation against permanent plot data (month 18) • Report on the results of model validation against forest inventory data (month 18) • Report on the results of model validation against forest inventory data based on EO data (month 18) • Working paper (joint with tasks 6 and 7) analyzing the results of the validations and proposing model modifications if necessary (month 24)

  10. TASK 7: • Model validation against carbon fluxes, physiological measurements and micro-meteorological variables • Task coordinator: • João Santos Pereira (JSP/ISA) • Deliverables: • Report describing the results of the validation against carbon fluxes, physiological and micro-meteorological variables measurements (month 18) • Working paper (joint with tasks 5 and 6) analyzing the results of the validations and proposing model modifications if necessary (month 24)

  11. TASK 8: • Model application at country level using remote sensing as input • Task coordinator: • Júlia Seixas (JS/IMAR) • Deliverables: • Working paper with the estimation of biomass and NPP for a 1 km grid (month 30) • Working paper with the estimation of biomass and NPP for a 2 km grid and comparison with estimations based on NFI plots (month 34) • Working paper with the analysis of the comparison of different spatial resolutions (month 34)

  12. TASK 9: • Analysis and discussion of the performances of each model and conclusions • Task coordinator: • Margarida Tomé (MT/ISA) • Deliverables: • Scientific paper (based on the working paper produced jointly by tasks 5, 6 and 7) analyzing the results of the validations and proposing model modifications if necessary (month 24) • Scientific paper proposing models and methodologies to be used in different applications in which biomass and NPP estimations will be needed
