  1. For Some Medical Procedures You Need to See a Specialist People need medical care all the time. In most cases a visit to the GP is all that is needed, but in other cases you see a specialist doctor such as the dermatologist for skin problems and the oncologist when you have cancer, for instance. Ophthalmologists are those specialist doctors t hat treat conditions related to problems with the eyes, and they also perform surgeries on the eyes, the eyelids and the immediate areas around the eyes. These specialist doctors offer many years’ training and experience, more than the GP would. When you need to see a specialist because you may be suffering from serious eye disease or conditions that need the intervention of an eye specialist, you make an appointment with the ophthalmologist to prescribe either medication – or surgery. Some ophthalmologists also offer services to those individuals that are concerned about their appearance, in other words issues related to cosmetic or plastic surgery. In this case the patient’s requirements are not for medical reasons, but to help them improve their appearance with, for example,

  2. Botox injections – or surgery to the eyelids in order to look more youthful again. This is important for many patients who may have bags under the eyes. The medical term for this type of surgery is the blepharoplasty, which is often called an eyelid lift; it can be done to either the upper or the lower lid. In the case of the upper lid the procedure is very often required not only for aesthetic reasons such as would be the case for the lower lid that appears tired and old because of the bags under the eye – often associated with advancing age – but at times because it may interfere with peripheral vision. This happens because the upper lid may droop down and interfere with vision; therefore the lift will be done to improve vision. But, just like the lower lid, the upper lid may, with time, start to deteriorate, collect additional fat and start to drop down. Therefore the blepharoplasty to the upper lid can be done for either medical or for cosmetic reasons, to either improve peripheral eyesight or help the patient to look – and therefore feel – better. The blepharoplasty for the lower eyelid is one of the most common procedures to help improve appearance and is done all the time, even to younger people who are more aware of their appearance. Of course surgery to the lower lid may also be needed for medical reasons such as, say, cancer; however, in terms of improving appearance it remains the most popular and most common surgery on the eyes. The blepharoplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure that seldom takes longer than an hour, most of the time less, and it is done under local anaesthetic. To have these procedures done may involve cost for the patient as medical insurance may not cover all of these; the patient simply finds out before the time – or carry the cost themselves. Good ophthalmologists that offer the eye bag surgery – and the upper lid lift – will often offer additional services such as eye socket and orbital surgery – the type of surgery needed to repair fractured bones in the eye socket, for example. In fact, the best ophthalmologist will be able to offer all those surgeries aimed at improving the eyes and surrounding areas, whether for cosmetic or functional, medical reasons. As is the case in every sphere of life, most people would like to know they receive the best treatment from their medical specialist, be that to offer them
