Laura von Nordheim, 2016 Relationships between Parenting Style, Parental Verbal Eating Messages, Body Image and Intuitive Eating • Background: Obesity continues to be a major public health challenge in the UK, calling for alternative treatment approaches. Intuitive Eating, an adaptive form of eating behaviour, has been put forward as a natural means of weight control with numerous physical and psychological health benefits. • Aims: Explore relationships between parenting style, parental verbal eating messages, body image and Intuitive Eating • Method: Links between parenting style, verbal eating messages, body esteem, body appreciation, drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction and Intuitive Eating were assessed using online questionnaires. • Participants: 65 women & 64 men = 129 total participants from the general public aged 22 – 82 years of age (average age: 31 years)

Laura von Nordheim, 2016 Relationships between Parenting Style, Parental Verbal Eating Messages, Body Image and Intuitive Eating • Results: In the present study, males ate sign. more intuitively than females. There were sign. links between maternal parenting style, verbal eating messages, body image and Intuitive Eating. • Discussion: Maternal care and control appear to play a role in offspring Intuitive Eating. Results of this study add to the evidence for links between parental eating messages, positive body image and Intuitive Eating. Findings highlight the importance of drive for thinness in connection with low Intuitive Eating scores.

Laura von Nordheim, 2016 Top 10 Recommendations: For parents/caregivers: For yourself: • Involve children in choosing, preparing and cooking food. • Offer unknown foods repeatedly but without force. • Don’t use food as reward, punishment or incentive • Offer appropriate portion sizes to allow children to respect hunger & satiety signals. • Be a positive role model! • Don’t worry if your child’s food intake fluctuates throughout the day.
