    3. SOME FACTS Desertification is a worldwide phenomenon causing land degradation. 5.1 billion hectares of the Earth’s surface is made up of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas. It is mainly considered as a combination of natural/ climatic processes and human interferences

    8. CASE STUDY- THE SAHEL The West African Sahel is the most seriously affected region for desertification in the world. (severe drought 1968-1973) It is a semi-arid zone south of the Sahara desert and rainfall is highly variable. Four main causes of desertification identified in the Sahel: overcultivation, overgrazing, deforestation and mismanagement of irrigation.
