  1. Genesis 45:1-15 Revelation

  2. 1 Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. He cried, “Make everyone go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. 3 And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. (Genesis 45:1-3, ESV)

  3. 4 So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. (Genesis 45:4-8, ESV)

  4. 9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; do not tarry. 10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 There I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to come, so that you and your household, and all that you have, do not come to poverty.’ 12 And now your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. 13 You must tell my father of all my honor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here.” 14 Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. After that his brothers talked with him. (Genesis 45:9-15, ESV)

  5. Main Point • Here we have the great reveal • Joseph alleviates their fears by providing wisdom • He concludes his speech by asking them to hurry back to Jacob and request that he comes to Egypt

  6. Application Points • Godly Wisdom • Joseph is the epitome of the wise person • In Potiphar's house…in the prison…and with Pharaoh • Throughout Joseph’s experience we have encountered wisdom • With his brothers he 1. Alleviated their fears and 2. arrived at conclusions he otherwise was unable to come to • When it comes to his brothers, wisdom is often depicted as a way we communicate • Consider the following Proverbs…

  7. “18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” “25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” (12:18, 25) “A Soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (15:1) “1 The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.” “21 The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness” “23 The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to this lips.” (16:1, 21, 23) “He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.” (22:11)

  8. Application Points • Godly Wisdom (2) • In all we find the use of wisdom in our speech • We are warned against folly in our speech • Likewise wisdom in persuasiveness and peace • He calms the anxiety, and persuades them to go to Jacob • He gives us an example of the individual who possesses Godly wisdom • He could have scolded them, punished them, but in the end he gave peace and comfort • The question is, what causes him to act in such a way? • What is causing him to look at the situation differently?

  9. Application Points • Godly Wisdom (3) • The answer is God • It is Godly wisdom which is able to look at the situation outside of himself • Joseph sees the world from the perspective of Godly wisdom which sees the purpose • Wisdom allows us to rise above ourselves and into a completely new understanding • What are some of the experiences you have been through in the last 20 years? • Was there a purpose for what you have experienced? • Consider Joseph when he says…

  10. “And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God.”

  11. Application Points • Godly Wisdom (4) • Is it possible that the experiences we go through are purposeful, so that in the end, God will preserve life? • I can only suspect that as time continues we will find the very thing which Joseph recognizes in his own life • That it is for the glory of God, and the glory of God is always good rather than evil • In Joseph we find a wise understanding of the threads of time which come to hurt and harm us…that God is sovereign • We have incredible hope for the future, because God’s plans cannot be undone • It requires us to know God • To understand that our God is truly good and we can know He is good because of what He has revealed in the Scriptures, in nature, and to our own lives

  12. Application Points • Godly Wisdom (5) • Joseph is sure because of all of this • Can we who are in Christ say any less? • It reminds me of something at VBS • I shared my sown story and I told them I find peace and move forward because I know that if God is more glorified in the end through the sorrow I go through now then I can rejoice • Our goal is not our own happiness, but the very glory of God • If God is even barely more glorified through my suffering than if I had not suffered then so beit • Let me go through the pain because I know God, and I know His glory is good, His will is good, and the world is a better place for even a fraction of the glory of God than without

  13. Application Points • Godly Wisdom (6) • This kind of response doesn’t come from the self • This kind of response can only come from above by God’s grace • As such, learn from Joseph and take time to seek Godly wisdom • If they had an end, then so will we • Have hope in the high and gusty vales, continue to cling to God in both joys and sorrows, for He is found in them all

  14. Application Points • Reconciliation • As it is, in this we see a reconciliation occur with Joseph and his brothers • A Godly wisdom leads to such reconciliation • Wisdom in itself doesn’t only deal with intellectual truths • Wisdom deals with everything we are • They find peace with each other, a peace which they had never dreamed of having before • Wisdom, God’s grace in granting wisdom, is what allows reconciliation to take place • If we are aware that God can use even the dark times to be turned to light, then it should not surprise us that forgiveness can happen

  15. Application Points • Reconciliation (2) • This doesn’t necessarily mean we need to forgive everyone all the time • Joseph needed to see if the guilt of his brothers was real before extending peace • God’s inner working of the brothers is as much a factor as His inner workings in Joseph • In the Joseph story we see how God is truly sovereign over it all • I cannot think of another and better representation of this than the work of Christ on the cross • The Scriptures describe Jews and Gentiles • Yet after Christ there is a third group…Christians • Those who are both Jews and Gentiles coming together for the glory of God

  16. Application Points • Reconciliation (3) • We find reconciliation with each other through the work of Christ • As with Joseph’s brothers we need to recognize our own guilt before such reconciliation can occur • Joseph and brothers are merely a prelude to the greater reconciliation God does through Christ • As such, in the wisdom of God we are able to find such reconciliation • We should rejoice in the reality that God is with us and for us in Christ • Rejoice, then, in such great news, and rejoice in the wisdom of God which He gives to us, to see the world in a new and marvelous light

  17. Application Points • The Gospel of Christ • Origins • Fall • Redemption • Glorification
