  1. Bell Ringer #6 – 11/29/10 • Read about the Green Bay Packers on page 164. • Why are they considered a “nonprofit” organization?

  2. Franchise • One company agrees – for a fee – to let a person set up an enterprise that uses original company’s name to sell goods and services • Parent company (original) is franchisor • Person owning franchise is franchisee • Hotels, restaurants, real estate agencies, Burger King, gas stations, etc.

  3. Looking for a new job?6 Top considerations: • Wages • Skills • Working Conditions • Location • Intrinsic Rewards • Market Trends

  4. Intrinsic Rewards • Intr. Rew. – non-monetary reasons for working at a particular job • Include worker’s pride, satisfaction in quality of work done, prestige, goodwill • Ex: teachers, social workers, preachers, artists

  5. Wages • Occupations w/ many potential workers tend to yield low wage rates. • High wages occur when the # of workers who are interested in – or qualified for – an occupation is limited. • For some people, wage is the most important factor in choosing an occupation.

  6. Working Conditions • Workplaces follow laws that regulate safety, noise levels, cleanliness, etc. • High-risk occupations (skyscraper construction, fire fighting) may earn higher wages than jobs with low risks to “life and limb”

  7. Change in U.S. Labor • Labor-intensive –an agricultural economy that produces goods primarily through animals & human power (what U.S. was) • Industrialization – process of mechanizing all major forms of production, occurred during early 1800s • Capital-intensive – economy depending on machines to produce goods (what U.S. has become due to industrialization)

  8. Homework • Read Ch 8, Sec 1 • Answer questions 1,2,3 on page 176 • Due Wednesday
