  1. Unit 7 PC SYSTEMS Unit 7: PC Systems Unit type: Certificate and Diploma Learning hours: 60 hours Unit level: 1

  2. Summary of learning outcomes • To achieve this unit learners must: • Find out the key components of a PC system • Explore different PC systems for a specified end-user • Research a suitable PC for a specified end-user • Develop user guidance for a specified end-user.

  3. LESSON 1 • Components of a PC system Let us first define what a system is:- A system is a collection of different working parts of anything which are connected together to produce a common product or goal. A computer system therefore has many such parts which are connected together for a common goal.

  4. Components of a PC system The parts or components are:- • Hardware: • motherboard, • RAM • CPU (Central Processing Unit), • Input Devices • Output Devices • Storage (Internal and External)

  5. Components of a PC system The parts or components are:- • Software: • Application software (eg word processing, presentation software), • Operating systems (eg Microsoft Windows XP) • DOS (disk operating system which uses command prompts)

  6. Functions of the Components • Hardware: • motherboard, • RAM • CPU (Central Processing Unit), • Input Devices • Output Devices • Storage (Internal and External)

  7. Functions of the Components • Hardware: • motherboard, • What is the main function of the mother board? • Choose the true statements below. It is a circuit board which links all electrical signals to various components It is a circuit sketching board which links all electrical signals The mother board is a piece of fiberglass upon which you mount the basic pieces of your computer It is a board on which all the components are interconnected It is (usually) a printed circuit board, and contains a minimum of the master clock and the CPU. It is a huge storage board for computer data
