  1. Processes Required for Plant Survival 6.2.7 Summarize the processes required for plant survival (including photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration).

  2. Plants are organisms that perform certain processes necessary for survival.

  3. Photosynthesis • Process where plants make their own food, a simple sugar, for survival.

  4. Chloroplasts, found in cells of leaf, contain chlorophyll, green pigment that absorbs light energy.

  5. Takes in carbon dioxide from air (through openings/pores, in leaf called stomata) and water (through roots) to make sugar (food) in leaves.

  6. Also produces oxygen and then releases it into air through stomata. • Photosynthesis provides oxygen in atmosphere that most living organisms need.

  8. Respiration • Food (sugar) provides energy needed by plants to perform life functions.

  9. To obtain energy, plants break down sugar in a process called respiration.

  10. Oxygen from air (taken in through stomata) combines with the sugar, which is then broken down into carbon dioxide and water.

  11. Energy is released and can now be used to perform life functions. • Carbon dioxide and water that are formed are then given off through stomata in leaves.

  12. Transpiration • Some water taken in through roots is used during photosynthesis. • However, plants lose most water through leaves – known as transpiration.

  13. Without a way to control (slow down) transpiration, plants would wither up and die, so plants. • Guard cellsopen and close stomata. • When stomata are closed, water cannot escape from leaf.
