  2. The Erasmus Mundus Programme • Erasmus is one of Europe’s flagship programme, 'Mundus' added an international window. • 3 Actions: • A1. joint programmes (Masters and Doctorates) • A2. partnerships • A3. promotion of the European Higher education

  3. Action 2 in South Africa • How it works? SA universities partner with European universities, according to requirements. • For what? to award scholarships to students (Masters and Doctorates) and to staff. • Source of funding? Instrument for Development cooperation (for SA mobility) and for cooperation with industrialised countries and other high income countries (for EU mobility). • Since when? 4th year of implementation.

Erasmus Mundus: 2011-2014 • About EUR 28 million (including EUR 4.4 million for EU mobility). • South Africanbeneficiaries from Target group 1 and Target group 2. • 537 beneficiaries: 278 Masters, 150 doctoral and 109 university staff. • 13 to 33 European universities formally involved. • 10 to 16 South African universities formally involved.
