  1. Is it all talk? Developing strategies for improving the dissemination of research outcomes to Government policy makers Dennis Pashen1, Stephanie De La Rue1& Anne Tiernan2 1: Mount Isa Centre for Rural & remote Health, 2: The Policy Practice

  2. Getting the message out • Great research is being done within PHC but often the findings don’t make it into policy. • The MICRRH PHCRED program has held two workshops looking into why this is so…

  3. Why we get it wrong?

  4. Why we get it wrong? • Absolute truths die the death of 1000 qualifications • Universities don’t recognise dissemination activities that suit this audience • Researchers don’t invest in their policy community

  5. What are we missing? • The four R’s: • Relationships • Relevance • Realism • Resilience

  6. Relationships

  7. Relationships • Investing in interest groups • Sympathy for Governmental responsibilities • Coordinating your message • Buy into your policy community

  8. Relevance • Fashion in Government Policy • With forethought, researchers are well placed to inform policy and to evaluate the impact of policy decisions • Always consider the policy implications of your research

  9. Realism!

  10. Realism • Ideas have their day – awareness of policy windows and trends • Many factors affect policy decisions • Some people are promoted above their ability and others aren’t listening to their superiors

  11. Resilience • Even it your research is right your policy can be wrong • Don’t take anything personally

  12. Dissemination: Doing it better • Learn about intra-Government structures • Use policy bulletins, opinion pages etc • Make the most of chance meetings – always have an elevator speech ready! • Be succinct!

  13. Ok, ok - I get the message!! • Where to from here: • Hold a showcase of Queensland PHC research to Government policy makers • Increase our participation in the PHC policy community • Maintain awareness of trends

  14. There is no pot of gold!

  15. May the force go with you!
