  2. Circe • Circe is a goddess known for turning enemies into animals. • Her name means “Hawk.” • Daughter of Helios and Perseis. • Lives on the island of Aiaia. • Renown for her knowledge of potions and herbs.

  3. Other Characters • Eurylokhos: member of Odysseus's crew; told Odysseus that the crew members had been turned into swine. • Odysseus: the leader of his crew; convinces Circe to turn his crew back into humans. • The crew: Odysseus's men who fell for Circe’s trick and were turned into swine.

  4. Plot Summary • Odysseus and his crew arrive at the island of Aiaia. • Eurylokhos was ordered by Odysseus to take half of the crew and explore the island. • They came upon the palace of Circe and the crew entered, but Eurylokhos stayed behind. • Circe greeted them and gave them a potion, and they turned into swine.

Plot Summary continued… • Eurylokhos informed Odysseus and he went to Circe’s palace to make her turn his men back to normal. • Odysseus took the plant, moly, from Hermes to protect him from the effects of the poison that Circe gave him. • She agreed to turn men back to normal, if Odysseus and his crew agreed to stay on her island for a while. • Odysseus and his men stayed for a year on the island, feasting and preparing for the journey ahead of them. • Circe told Odysseus how to get to the underworld.

Ancient Greek Society • The Ancient Greeks showed favoritism. • Certain people like Odysseus and Circe could use their power to get what they wanted. • Circe and other gods and goddesses had the power to control humans. • The Ancient Greeks did not usually respect people and the value of their lives.

  7. Modern Society • An example that is similar to Ancient Greek Society is communism. • Communism is a form of Socialism. • It is an economic system in which all the means of production are controlled by the government. • The book, Animal Farm is a book about communism and its effects.
