  1. Yr 8 poetry/classics:PENELOPE

  2. The story so far…. • Fast forward… • Odysseus gets home to find Penelope, his wife being pursued by all the local noblemen • She refuses to marry and has delayed any need to make a decision for the 20 years of his absence • Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar and…

  3. BIOGRAPHY: • Wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus • Remains faithful for 20 years while Odysseus is at war • Tricks the suitors by promising to make a decision about marriage when she has finished weaving a carpet. • Every night she unpicks the work and the carpet is never finished • Tricks the suitors into entering the bow-stringing competition.

  4. Activities • Formal assessment by essay • You will read 2 versions of the story – Homer’s and Carol Anne Duffy’s • Penelope is shown rather differently in the two versions – you will compare them and decide which you think is the more convincing. • You will be introduced to a FEMINIST reading of an ancient text

  5. THINK… • If a man goes to war and is absent for 20 years with no contact with his wife, can she consider remarriage? • Can we legitimately expect Penelope be thrilled to see Odysseus after 20 years? • Might she be permitted to wonder why it took him 10 years to get home?
