  1. Alive-O 6Term 3: Lesson 2 The Sacrifice of the Mass

  2. Jesus Loved God Jesus loved God, his Father, above all else. He did everything his Father asked him to do. He always loved as he knew God would want him to, even when others disapproved of the things he said and did.

  3. Jesus knew that God wanted him to show love to everyone.

  4. One group of people who often disapproved of the things Jesus did was the Pharisees. The Pharisees belonged to the Jewish faith. They kept the Jewish laws very carefully and insisted that everyone else did the same.

  5. They spent a lot of time reading the scriptures, which we now call the Old Testament, and knew the laws and rules very well and kept them carefully.

  6. The following is a story about a time when Jesus did something that angered the Pharisees.

  7. Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy (adapted from Luke 14:1-6) One day Jesus went to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal. It was the Sabbath day. The Pharisees watched him very closely.

  8. Just then, Jesus saw a man in front of him whose body was very swollen.

  9. Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, ‘Is it lawful to cure people on the Sabbath, or not?’ But they were silent.

  10. So Jesus took the man and healed him, and sent him away.

  11. Then he said to them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on the Sabbath day?’ And they could not reply to this.

  12. Can you remember the Third Commandment which was given to Moses? Keep the Lord’s Day Holy

  13. The Pharisees also thought that Jesus should not be seen with people whom they regarded as sinners. They thought that these people should be treated as outcasts. Jesus was anxious to show everyone that he loved everybody.

  14. Jesus Eats with Tax-collectors and Sinners (adapted from Matthew 9:10-12) And as he sat at dinner in Matthew’s house, many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.

  15. When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax- collectors and sinners?’

  16. But when Jesus heard this he said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a doctor, but those who are sick do.’
