  1. Mendeley The Open Source Reference Management Application Dr. Manorama Tripathi Librarian Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi manoramatripathi2@yahoo.com

  2. There are some essential traits which an individual must have in order to become an accomplished researcher. For instance, an individual must have the ability to organize the retrieved literature accurately, datasets generated, methods and protocols adopted in the course of the research. These should be easily accessible for sharing and reuse. The individuals should be able to liaise, network and collaborate with their peers for using resources and expertise. Mendeley is a free reference management software. It is very simple to use and may be downloaded from www.Mendeley.com. . It is a management tool which helps the researchers in organizing their research and collaborating with peers. It has an online version known as Mendeley Web where the users may create an account and maintain their profiles..

  3. Installing Mendeley Plese register with the website and download desktop version from http://www.mendeley.com/ The screenshot shows Mendeley Desktop Figure1:Screenshot of MendeleyDesktop

  4. Creating Folders You may create folders by clicking on Create folder on the Left hand pane. This is shown in the Screenshot given below, Figure 2. Figure2:Screenshot ofFolders

  5. Creatingsubfolders • Click on afolder • Click create folder button- a new folder will be created within the selectedfolder. • Adding papers/documents • The researchers may add and save papers through various methods givenbelow: • Add single files or entire folder • WatchFolder • Drag and drop PDFs to your Mendeley • Add from Mendeley Research Catalog • Use Mendeley web importer to add from onlinedatabases • Add from other existing reference managementtools

  6. Creating Watch Folder • Select Watch Folder option from Add File menu in the main tool bar and browse the folder which contains documents of your research area . • Mendeley will add each document to the Library, scanning all useful details such as title, author and journal. • Any subsequent addition of doument/PDF file will be included in Mendeley. The option is shown below in the screenshot.

  7. Figure3:Screenshot of WatchFolder

  8. Adding Tags • The researchers may select a document and add tags in the right hand details pane and then search for tag names to find a group of documents. • Tags work like folders. • Difference is that it is easy to add lots of tags to a document than to drag a document to many folders. • It is shown below in the screenshot, Figure 4.

  9. Figure 4: Adding tags to thearticles

  10. Keyword Searching • Search for a keyword in a document through toolbar in the top right. The searched keyword will be highlighted through out the document which saves one’s time in searching for specific word or phrase. The screenshot given below shows the keyword searching box, Figure5.

  11. Figure 5 Keyword Searching • Adding papers from Mendeley catalog • Select Literature search tab on the left hand pane to search papers from the Mendeley catalog. • In order to add documents simply click on , “Save” on the right hand pane or drag and drop articles to any folder or group you are a member.

  14. Generation of Citations and Bibliographies • Mendeley helps in generating citations and bibliographies. • The researchers have to download Mendeley’s Citation plugin and install in their Word. The plug in is compatible with Word and Libreoffice. It also supports BibTex export for use with LaTex. • Installing Citation Plugin • Open Mendely Desktop • Open the Tools Menu and select the option of Install MSWord Plugin. • One has to ensure that the word processor is closed before attempting to install the plugin. • It allows researchers to create and format their citations and bibliography according to their choosen style. • Allows them to cite seamlessly without leaving their word processor. • Saves times by automatically generating bibliograpy in a few clicks.

  15. The screenshots , Figure 8 and Figure 9given below show the steps. Figure 8:Installing CitationPlug-in Figure 9:Tabs of Insert Citations and Open Mendeley inMS-Word

  16. How to cite usingMendeley • In word file place cursor where you want the citation toappear. • Click on Insert citations tab in the toolbar. • Mendley Library willopen • Selct the citation and click on citetab. • Citation will beinserted. • One can cite multipledocuments • Select citationstyle • Click on Insert Bibliography and a bibliography will begenerated.

  20. Read , highlight and annotate in PDFs • The researchers may jot down, annotate or write their comments or observations while reading a full text which they have downloaded and saved. The comments or observations may be shared with other researchers. • The built in PDF viewer allows researchers to post notes, highlight and the same will be saved. • If the researchers want to have access to their PDFs, from any where-they may activate the file synchronization feature. They will be able to access PDF files in Mendeley Web library from anywhere. • The researchers may start reading the pdf file page where they left previously.

  21. The screenshot , Figure13 given below shows how to highlight and annotate. Figure13 Highlighting and adding notes in aPDF

  22. Importing references from online databases, Google Scholar and websites. • The Web importer helps the researchers in importing papers, web pages and full text articles from different online databases and Google Scholar. • Installing Web importer • Open Mendely Desktop • Open the Tools Menu and select the option of Install Web Importer • The screenshots,Figure14,Figure15 given below shows how to install Web importer.

  31. The researchers may save full texts and access them from anywhere or any device. The full texts or citations are saved in cloud due to “ sync’ feature of Mendeley. • The Sync tab facilates synchronizing Mendeley data across different devices. • Click on Sync whenever you make any changes in your Mendeley library on desktop version. • It will ensure that data is securely stored in Mendeley servers. The researchers may access it on any device or machine. • Notes and annotations are available to everyone in the group if the researchers click on sync tab. • Mendeley Web helps the researchers in: • Creating and maintaining their profiles; joining any research group. The screenshot given below shows the different groups which researchers may explore and join

  36. Sharing updates and links with other researchers. • Expanding their network by following other researchers. There are over 6 million researchers on Mendeley. • Searching jobs; there are more than 2,00,000+ jobs listed on Mendeley careers. 37. By extending information on the funding bodies in various fields. Mendeley has indexed over 4000+ funding organizations across the various subject areas. The screenshot shows the information of funding orgnizations Figure 27 Information about Fundingorganizations Source:https://www.mendeley.com/research-funding/

  38. In assessing the impact of their research, the researchers may find out the number of readers and citations for their publications. • Mendeley Data enables researchers to deposit, upload and share the data which they have used in their research. The data may be raw or processed, video code, software algorithms, protocols, scripts and methods. The datasets are searchable, and each dataset is assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and may be cited. The Mendeley data repository facilitates data sharing, visibility and replication of research studies. At present, the repository has 10.7 million datasets. It is a cloud-based platform and helps the researchers in managing the entire lifecycle of research data. • Mendeley is a user-friendly reference management tool which facilitates researchers in collaborating with others and organizing their work. It helps them showcase and promotes their research work globally. • Reference: https://www.mendeley.com/
