  1. Act Of Union Act Of Union By: Anika, Christina, Brian

  2. A hope for government • Durham recommended this union in 1839 in his report. • In may of 1839, the union was introduced to the British commons. • The act of union united Upper Canada and Lower Canada as one government; with one legislative assembly in east and west, and the whole canada would have one debt.

  3. A hope for government.. cont • When the British government rejected Durham’s responsible government, they looked to a new side which was the union of two Canada's’. • However, a decision that was made for a solvent for the government wasn’t working. • The 1840 act was found unworkable, so great coalition was made to reform political parties.

  4. Act of Union The act of British parliament passes in July of 1840 uniting upper Canada and lower Canada to be ruled under one government (also called Canada east, Canada west) .Each act had to be passed in the parliament of great Britain and the parliament of Ireland. Some things that came with changing to one government were: • Permanent civil list • French language was not allowed to be spoken from official government use

  5. Good effects • It would solve the financial issues from the investment and debt that lower Canada had developed. • The joining of the two Canada’s would help them to communicate better. • The debt of upper Canada would be resolved.

  6. Bad effects for canadiens • The act would ban French language and no longer would they have their own civil law and religious education. • Lower Canada, with a greater population, was only allowed half of the seats in the assembly. • The British minority wanted to approve because it would put rebellious Canadiens back in place. • The terms of the report weren’t fair to Lower Canada because they were expected to pay the debt from Upper Canada.

  7. Under rules • The legislators of Upper Canada had two rules that would have to be carried out. • The first was that Kingston would have to be named the capital • The second was that English was to be proclaimed the official language of the new Canada nation.
