  1. 환경생물공학<조류생물공학에 대한 소개> EBTL-Jeon You Chul

  2. Global Warming Problems Global warming is caused by the continuous development under regardless of environment Result from accumulation of Green House Gases (CO2, CH4, CFCs, water vapor, etc.) in the atmosphere Result in temperature increase abnormal climate rise of sea water level

  3. Direct Fixation Target : flue gas Biomass reuse : solid/liquid fuels, biosorbents, etc. Indirect Fixation Target : captured CO2 Biomass reuse : health foods, animal feeds, composts, pharmaceuticals, etc. atmospheric CO2 combustion respiration dissolution photosynthesis fossil fuel dissolved CO2 photosynthesis death respiration humus Biological CO2 Fixation (BCF)using photosynthetic organisms

  4. SUN Low CO2 Recycle Flue gas • Value-added • products • Biosorbents Wastewater Treated water Photobioreactor CO2-emitting plant Applications of Photosynthetic Microorganisms • Production of health food (eq, chlorella) • Production of fine chemicals (eq, astaxanthin, β-carotein, etc) • Biological CO2 fixation • Wastewater treatment • Heavymetal biosorption

  9. INTRODUCTION Astaxanthin : Green Vegetative cells→ Red cyst cells under unfavorable environmental conditions : nitrogen limitation, strong light intensity, high temperature, pH, salinity, or phosphate deficiency

  10. Astaxanthin • Ketocarotenoid (3,3’-dihydroxy---carotene-4-4’-dione) • Types of currently available astaxanthin • Synthetic forms(>95%) • Natural forms • Krill and craw fish oils (~ 0.15 %) • Phaffia yeast (~ 0.40 %) • Haematococcus species (1.5-4.0 %) • Features • Superior antioxidant effects to -carotene, zeaxanthin, and vitamin E • High price (~2,500 US$/kg)

  11. Can Mixotrophic Culture Fix CO2?

  12. Finding Optimal Conditions (Light Intensity & Acetate Concentration)
