Background • IUM was established in December 2001, and is one of 8 research institutes under CMA, within the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) of the People’s Republic of China, each of them specialize in one specific field。 • IUM is the only research institution in China dedicated to Urban meteorology.

  4. Background Goals • To conduct applied research associated with urban meteorology; • To conduct the thorough and innovatory study on urban meteorology with advanced observation , data processing and modelling techniques; • To promote urban meteorology research in China.

Observation & Data Processing Branch • Objectives • to design some observing networks to meet the requirements for meteorological and climate data in the urban environment. • to develop new observing techniques in urban area; • to develop the data base techniques for massive observation data quality control, data collection, transmission,archiving, distribution ,etc.

  7. Forecast Technique Branch Objectives To develop various advanced forecasting techniques adapted to urban weather service, including: • Specific and accurate weather forecasting technique in urban area( finer spatial scales); • Data analysis and assimilation technique in city area; • Post processing of mesoscale model output and verification technique; • Severe weather nowcasting technique.

  8. Urban Ecological Met.Branch • Objectives • Relationship between urban development and climate change; • Interactions between the weather and ecological system in urban area and their impacts on the human activities and health ; • Air quality forecasting technique in urban area ; • Urban biological and medical meteorology; • Meteorological factors effects in the city planning.

  9. Urban Met. Disaster Branch • Objectives • Study on the Met. disaster mechanisms and disaster reduction techniques(heavy rain,high temperature,sand storm); • Risk evaluation and consultation on policy making and city planning; • emergency planning, response, and recovery in urban area.

Developed mesoscale NWP system for daily operational forecast in Beijing area; • Developed air quality forecasting system for daily operational forecast • Developed dust weather and sand storm operational prediction system for BMB • Highway visibility monitoring and Forecasting technique • the relationship between weather , air pollution & city planning Accomplishment

  15. IUM and NCAR scientists Cooperation & Exchange(Ⅲ) • Sino-US Workshop on Convective Storm Nowcasting

  16. Collaboration Projects with NCAR/UCAR • Development and applications of nowcasting systems for very short range prediction of convective weather; • Developing techniques to retrieve water vapor information from ground-based GPS receivers; • Developing advanced meteorological data processing and analysis systems, particularly the three-dimensional variational data assimilation techniques (3DVAR);
