  1. Analysis of 10 MHz and 40 MHz RF scenarios for PS2 M. Benedikt and S. Hancock PS2 meeting 19/03/2008

  2. Contents • Introduction • PS2 working range • 40 MHz system • Basic rf options and motivations for • 10 MHz system • 40 MHz system • Beams considered and beam parameters

  3. Introduction • Basic assumptions for working range • Protons: • Injection at 4 GeV, extraction at 50 GeV • Injector (LP) SPL with 40 MHz chopping of injected beam • Ions (without “major” modifications in chain): • Injection directly from LEIR rigidity 6.7 Tm (presently 4.8 Tm) • PS2 working range:

  4. Basic rf options and motivations • 10 MHz system • Emulation of PS 10 MHz system • Tuning range > 3 (3 MHz – 10 MHz) • Many harmonics for p-acceleration, covers ion frequency range • Additional systems needed (20 and 40 MHz) for producing LHC type bunch patterns (25 and 50 ns) and shortening. • 40 MHz system • Motivated by SPL chopping at 40 MHz • Any LHC bunch pattern up to 40 MHz via chopping at injection • Question on possible tuning range (even ~2% for protons) • Tuning range for ions • Bucket length limitation of 25 ns (50 ns with tuning range 2) • Problems for beams like nTOF, ions • Problems for injecton from PS at low energy during interim period?

  5. Beam parameters for the 10 MHz option

  6. Beam parameters for the 40 MHz option
