ADN Metadata Framework • ADEPT/DLESE/NASA’s Joined Digital Lib. • A common XML-schema based framework • Co-development of framework components • geospatial, collection, review, models • Describe geoscience educational learning objects, including georeferenced objects • Looks like a hybrid of IMS and DC but with specific community-driven fields.

DLESE Catalog System • Structure: Acts on XML files in a flat directory structure (no database) • Assumption: unique mapping between library ID and URLs • Underlying Indexes: • Metadata index over editable fields only • Resource content index over “reachable” resources • Technical Specification: • IE 4.x or higher, Netscape: 6.0, • Lucene 1.0, Tomcat 3.2, Java 1.3, JDOM Beta 4

What Can the System Do? • Contribute: create new metadata records • Discover: controlled vocabularies & keyword searches on metadata records in the library, plus search resource content when available • Manage: review & edit; keyword & fielded search, some controlled vocabulary search; plus movement through QA process • Share: import/export metadata records to/from other XML-based collections via an OAI service (not yet implemented)

Tasks • Find all records that Holly Devaul created. • Find all records that ADEPT has contributed. • Cataloger Goodman forgets her DLESE ID but knows her resource is about hurricanes. • Cataloger Tierney wants to create a relationship between records 943 & 946. • Catalog the SEES records with more granularity emphasizing ocean temperature.
