However, when it comes to cleaning the carpet after sewer backup, the level of damages caused need to be taken in consideration. For instance, if the carpet and pad have been severely damaged by sewer-backup, then it will be prudent to dispose away or remove the carpet. However, cleaning up can be considered for highly valued rugs that are not severely damaged. In such cases, one needs to be extremely cautious while doing the task by himself/herself and hence, must follow specialized in-plant cleaning processes. While eradicating the carpet in case of severe damage, it is imperative to treat the damaged areas with antimicrobial before removing from the environment. This helps in preventing further contamination and hence, dissemination of harmful pathogens and other contaminants in the environment. However, when it comes to cleaning up the carpet after sewer backup, some safety precautions are indispensable. Following steps are necessary if you are going to clean the carpet by yourself: 1.Step-1 Protect your eyes, skin and face from pathogens found in raw sewage by wearing eye protection, gloves and face mask respectively. You can use respirators (a 3M-R6800 with

However, it is advised to check with local municipalities for any restrictions pertaining to the disposal of the sewage waste. 3.Step-3 Throw the pad away after lifting the carpet and the pad. In order to blow dry the carpet direct fans on the carpet laid over a few saw horses. Turn on the dehumidifier and open all windows to aid in the drying process. 4.Step-4 Apply Unsmoke Microban Disinfectant Spray to all affected areas by using a pump-up sprayer, to save the environment from any dangerous bacteria. 5.Step-5 Treat the hard surface items like subflooring, studs and joists with a sealer (Foster’s 40- 51 Fungal Protector). Before laying down a new pad, let the floor dry completely. 6.Step-6 Let the carpet completely dry before laying it down. A steam cleaner will be required to clean the carpet, or in case you find it difficult to clean and disinfect the carpet by yourself, you might need to hire a professional team. For accelerating the drying process and reducing the moisture content in the air position the fans on the carpet and keep the dehumidifier on respectively. Sewer backup is a serious problem which requires one to be meticulous in the cleaning process. However, calling a professional team for cleaning the carpet after sewer backup is what most people resort to.
