The Loss of Folk Culture • Many countries fear the loss of folk culture traditions in the face of the diffusion of popular culture, especially from Western countries like the United States • Different political systems/values • Different religious values • Different perspectives on family traditions and the role of women
Changing the Role of Women • The infiltration of popular culture often has the effect of changing the role of women in less developed countries or those with strict traditional values & practices. • Women may: • Gain more opportunities outside of the home • Examples: Education, careers • Bear less children • Gain equality in political affairs • Be subjected less to traditional religious & cultural customs that are harmful to them • Examples: Chinese foot binding, women in Afghanistan, child marriages in the Middle East & Southern Asia
Degrading the Environment • The “culture of consumption” that accompanies popular culture • Causes a great deal of pollution • Uses ridiculous amounts of scarce resources
