Nutrient Delivery to the Gulf of Mexico (A) Total Nitrogen (B) Total Phosphorus Alexander, et al, Environ. Sci. Tech.,2008 Natural Resources Conservation Service
Why Update? Natural Resources Conservation Service
Des Moines Water Works has the largest nitrate removal facility in the world
Conservation Effects Assessment Project • Upper Mississippi River Basin report, June 2010 • http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/nri/ceap/umrb/index.html • Missouri River report is expected soon
Drivers in Iowa Nutrient Mgt • Hypoxia in the Gulf • Iowa drinking water quality • Quality of Iowa’s lakes and streams • Manure stinks • Economics?
Response • National Nutrient Management Strategy • EQIP implementation released 9/1/2010 • Strategy released 10/15/2010 • Based around a set of core practices (Basic & Enhanced) • Mississippi Basin River Initiative • $80 million/year for four years • Enhanced EQIP payments • All EQIP contracts must include nutrient management
Response • Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy • The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship requested assistance from Iowa State University to: • Define technical options to reduce Iowa’s export of nutriens • Determine how to implement a control effort
What’s New in Iowa? • Focus on nitrogen along with phosphorus • Focus on all nutrient inputs along with manure • Look at many other treatment options • Nutrient treatment wetlands • Cover crops • Perennials in rotation • Bioreactors • Engage many more producers • Still very much a work in progress
