The Vikings • This was a group of Scandinavian warriors who raided Northern Europe and North America from the 700s – 1100s
The Vikings- Technology • They had swift wooden long ships, equipped with sails and oars. • Shallow drought of these ships meant they were able to reach far inland by river or stream to strike and move before local forces could assemble.
The Polynesians • The Polynesians were a sea faring group who later begin to explore in their large canoes. • By the 1500’s the Polynesians had explored and colonized many islands across the Pacific.
The Polynesians-Technology • The Polynesians voyaged across thousands of miles using double canoes!
The Indian Ocean and Chinese Voyages • Most of Indian Ocean trade operated outside of empires. • 1368- The Ming Dynasty will overthrow the Mongols • They will reestablish China as a superpower.
The Indian Ocean and Chinese Voyages • The Ming will send out fleets of imperial ships. • Zheng He: took a series of state voyages to establish Chinese dominance in Indian ocean trade. • He will establish contacts in India and Africa
The Indian Ocean and Chinese Voyages • Chinese expedition will stop in 1431. As they focus their attention on internal matters and feel that others can not contribute to China.
