  5. GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER • INSTRUCTIONS: Pair up with a partner and look through your wallet or purse. Find something unusual. Explain to your partner the significance of the object you found, why you carry it with you and what it reveals about you as a person.

  11. WHAT IS A PREPOSITION? NOUN: a name (a person, place or thing) Example: “Mark !” ADJECTIVE: a modifier (describes a noun) “Mark ran to the closest C.R.” VERB: an action “Mark ran.” ADVERB: a modifier (describes a verb) “Mark ran to the closest C.R. quickly.” PRONOUN: replaces a noun (“He” or “I” instead of “Mark”) Preposition ?!?!

  12. WHAT IS A PREPOSITION? • Definition: A word that explains the time, space or logical relationship between the other parts of the sentence. (Time) “Mark ran for three hours.” (Relationship) “Mark visited the house of Belinda Lora.” (Space) “Mark ran to the C.R.”

  13. WHAT IS A PREPOSITION? Easy way to remember: a word that shows the relationship between two things.

  14. PREPOSITION RULES • Some prepositions must be used with certain words and sometimes they don’t have any logical relationship. “I usually drink coffee in the morning.” “I sleptin this morning and missed my bus.” “I tried to catch the dog, but it ranaway.”

  15. PREPOSITION RULES • Prepositions must be followed by nouns, and they usually should not go at the end of the sentence. Examples: Wrong: “Who are you talking to?” Right: “To whom are you talking?” Wrong: “Where are you coming from?” Right: “From where are you coming?”

  16. PREPOSITIONS REVIEW • Instructions: with a partner, read the following passage and write down all the prepositions.

  17. “500,000 party at Rizal Park” MANILA – About half a million revelers jumped to their feet, cheered, clapped, blew on toy horns and threw confetti as multicolored fireworks lit up the sky over the Rizal Park in the first ever New Year countdown held at the metropolis’ biggest recreation center. The show lasted for about three minutes, but people showed no sign of leaving for some time after the countdown as other fireworks were set off in surrounding areas.

  21. PRONUNCIATION SKILLS • “American” English is not correct pronunciation. British English, Filipino English, Chinese English, etc., are simply different dialects. • Being able to be understood is more important than having perfect pronunciation
