  4. Welcome to the Business Administration & Information Technology Program on the Poteau Campus of Kiamichi Technology Center. I am pleased to have you as part of our team! It is impossible to memorize all the information and knowledge needed to succeed in the rapidly changing field of technology. Therefore, the overall goal of this program is to help you learn how to discover and utilize the abundant resources technology provides. Introduction

Philosophy The philosophy of the Business Administration and Information Technology Program is that each student should have an equal opportunity for learning what best suits his/her interests and abilities. My overall goal is to develop each individual’s potential so that they leave my program a proud and productive citizen.

Objectives The primary objective of this program is to provide students with marketable skills to be used in a global and technologically-driven business environment and to assist students in developing work habits which will promote success on the job. Overall objectives of this program include the following:

  8. Objectives (cont’d) • Assist students in developing technology and workplace skills needed for understanding and solving problems in the ever-changing business world. • Provide students with an environment conducive to learning.

Objectives (cont’d) • Assist students in developing strong communication skills including the ability to interpret, analyze, and transmit information orally as well as in writing. • Provide an individualized training program that is project-based and will meet the needs of both high school and adult learners.

  10. Objectives (cont’d) • Provide students with opportunities for job shadowing and on-the-job experiences in order to acquire training beyond the classroom. • Develop partnerships between my program and the business community.

  11. Objectives (cont’d) • Assist in placement and follow-up of students in jobs and/or college after completion of the program. • Provide student organization activities that reflect business expectations.

  12. Pathway Areas • All students will select one of the following pathways: • Administrative & Information Support • Interactive Media

  13. Administrative & Information Support majors: • Administrative Assistant (HS only) • Advanced Administrative Assistant • Office Information Specialist

  14. Students should choose the Administrative & Information Support pathway if they wish to: • Pursue a career as an Administrative Assistant, Customer Service Representative, Office Manager, or in a related field. • Continue their education in Business, Communications, Human Relations, Management or Marketing.

  15. Interactive Media major: • Web Designer Entry Level (HS only) • Desktop Publisher/Graphic Design (HS only) • Interactive Media (HS only)

  16. Students should choose the Interactive Media specialty area if they wish to: • Pursue a career as a web designer/internet site designer, desktop publisher or video editor • Continue their education in internet technologies, graphic design, business, video, or computer programming.

  17. Methodology Training in the Business Administration and Information Technology Program is individualized instruction integrated with individual and team projects. This program differs from a typical class in that it is set up like a real office. My role is that of supervisor or manager; your role is that of trainee or employee.

  18. Methodology (cont’d) In addition to receiving training in business/computer areas, the life-long skills of time management, goal setting, self-discipline, responsibility, and accountability are a fundamental part of this program.

  21. Program Guidelines Expectations in a Workplace Environment Being successful in the business world requires more than technical skills. Listed below are some of the traits employers desire of their employees. Therefore, you are expected to demonstrate these skills daily.

Respect and cooperation with all individuals • Honesty • Responsibility, accountability, and dependability • Initiative and willingness to work • Enthusiasm and efficiency • Flexibility • Desire to be successful in completing tasks • Leadership • Personal cleanliness and good grooming • Professionalism

  23. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures • PUNCTUALITY – You are expected to be in your seat or assigned work area on time before class and after breaks every day. If you are tardy, you MUST get a TARDY SLIP from the office before coming to class. Place the tardy slip on the office manager’s desk and immediately go to work. • **Do NOT knock on the door to come into class unless you have a tardy slip in hand!

  24. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures • ABSENTEES – It is impossible to succeed in any working environment when you are not present to complete your work. If you are absent, you MUST obtain an ABSENTEE SLIP from the office before coming to class. Place the admit on the office manager’s desk and immediately go to work.

  25. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures 3. Leaving Early – ALL students who leave class early must obtain a “Left Early” slip from the front office before leaving campus. For pell students, these minutes will be added to total absences.

  26. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures ALL STUDENTS: If you are going to be absent or tardy, it is imperative that you notify the school office. This message will then be given to me so I will be aware of the situation. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: If you are going to be absent due to a school activity, you are responsible for making sure our office is notified by your home school PRIOR to the day you will be absent. (10 activity days per year maximum)

  27. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures ADULT STUDENTS --Those receiving financial aid need to be particularly careful of attendance. Pell students will be dropped for poor attendance.

  28. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures NOTE: Repeated tardies and/or absences indicate that you may not have the self-discipline or desire to succeed in this program. (Refer to your Kiamichi Student Handbook for more detailed information on attendance and tardies.)

Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures • It has been my experience that poor attendance and inability to stay on task are the major contributors to students NOT succeeding in this program. • Conversely, those students with good attendance records and strong work ethics are the ones who obtain successful employment.

  30. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures • DRESS – You will be required to dress professionally every Wednesday, which will be “Professional Development Day.”

Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures Professional dress is defined by the following: Ladies - skirt and blouse or dress slacks/or dress with appropriate accessories including dress shoes, etc. Gentlemen - slacks and shirt with tie, optional sport coat or suit with appropriate dress shoes. *No jeans, tennis shoes or boots for ladies or gentlemen on these days.

  32. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures Also, please pay close attention to your dress during the week because many times our students are asked to work in other areas on campus.

  33. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures • CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF WORK AREA – Clean your work area every day before leaving class. Always use extreme care when operating equipment. If you have a problem with equipment, let me know immediately. You may use the bottom row of cabinets in the back as a locker area in which to store personal items and books.

Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures Eating and drinking while at your work area are not considered professional behavior; therefore, reserve those activities for your break time outside of the workplace environment. TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR PROGRAM AND IN YOUR SCHOOL – IT REFLECTS ON YOU!

  35. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Workplace Procedures No cell phones are to be VISIBLE, TURNED ON, OR USED during class time! (unless part of a classroom activity) X CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION—YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT YOUR CELL PHONE FOR A FEW HOURS

  36. Program Guidelines (cont’d) Part of professionalism is learning to use a cell phone for PERSONAL use on PERSONAL time and ACADEMIC use on ACADEMIC time

  37. Professional Development Opportunities STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS – All business technology students are expected to become active members of Business Professionals of America (BPA).

Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) The organization meets weekly during class hours, participates in community activities, and participates in field trips and leadership conferences during the year. Required dues vary and are sometimes paid by our district office. See your instructor for this year’s policy.

  39. Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) Membership in National Career and Technology Honor Society is also available for those students who qualify. High School students have the potential to be nominated into Who’s Who Among American High School students.

  40. Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY – Every Wednesday is devoted to professional development. We will begin class with a BPA meeting/workshop. In addition, our class will hold a team meeting to keep everyone up to date on deadlines, changes, and items of concern. Each student will be required to discuss current projects on which they are working. You should be prepared to keep a calendar of upcoming events.

  41. Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) If you are absent from a team meeting, it is your responsibility to obtain information about that meeting. The office manager will be able to answer specific questions concerning the meeting, but general information should be obtained from your coworkers. 

  42. Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) ON-THE-JOB TRAINING – Second-year students who maintain attendance and academic requirements may be eligible for on-the-job training. In addition, job training will be contingent upon job availability. This could be a paid or unpaid work experience.

  43. Professional Development Opportunities (cont’d) COLLEGE CREDIT – College credit is available for work completed in the BAIT course. See your instructor for details.

  45. Grading Policies & Procedures (cont’d) Time Management/Leadership Grade – Working in today’s fast paced business environment requires effective use of time and leadership skills. You will complete a time management self-assessment form each day, which I will then review and record as a weekly grade.

  46. Grading Policies & Procedures (cont’d) Test Grade – Competence in selected skills will be assessed through a variety of methods, including: hands-on, objective, and subjective tests.

  47. Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers, and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don't see it in yourself.
