  1. Of Beetles & Angels Book By: Mawi Asgedom Presentation Done By: Taylor Murray, Xzavier Odom, and Tyler Pruitt

  2. Characters • Mawi Asgedom (The main character) • Tewolde Asgedom ( His brother) • Haileab (His father)

  3. Mawi is the author of this book, and is the main character. He starts off in Sudan and then moves to America. He is a very diligent worker. In high school his schedule consisted of coming back from home at 6:00pm from sports, eating, cleaning up the house, and then studied ‘till midnight. He then woke up at 6:00am and did it all over again. He was dedicated and kind. He was voted class president because he treated everyone, even the lowlife beetles in his school kindly. He ended up applying to 8 schools and chose Harvard. Mawi

  4. Tewolde • Tewodle was Mawi’s brother. Mawi always looked up to his brother, and Tewodle always stood up for him during many of the fights they had in school. Tewodle was kind, always nice to the elderly. • He was also very smart. He had straight A’s like Mawi. He planned to go to a good college but died in a drunk driving accident before he could.

  5. Haileab • Haileab was Mawi’s father. In the book a couple of stories are of him. In Sudan he was the best dancer and doctor. • When his family came to America he was very persistent for his sons to be very good in school. He often referred to the phrase “Or I will make you lost”. • In the middle of the book they tell us he had very bad eyes and soon got diabetes. But he made sure his sons did all the community service they could and he did it with them. Sometimes he got in trouble for it though.

  6. Summary • Mawi and his family were living in Sudan for some time. They got sponsored by a church and were flown to Chicago, Illinois. At first they had trouble adjusting to the schools and not getting into fights. As Mawi and his siblings got older they understood the big picture about school. • Their father pushed them to be the best they could be in school. Tewolde and Mawi achieved just that. They were straight A students and were very kind people. Sadly Tewolde tragically died in a drunk driving accident in his senior year. Shortly after that Mawi was accepted into Harvard. One day his father was out biking at night and a drunk driver stole his life. Unfortunately Haileab was not able to see his son Mawi graduate from Harvard.

  7. One message in the story talked about respect and how you treat people. An example of treating people the you want to be treated is when Mawi was in high school. He had ran for class president and he wasn’t that sure that he would win, but because most of the other candidates treated people like beetles he treated them like angels. The other main message of the story was that even if you come from someplace with little opportunities if you work hard you can do anything. Mawi is an example of this because he came from the refugee camps in Sudan, came to America and graduated from one of the best schools. Main Messages
