  6. Network’s renewed aims: • Primary goals: • To increase the amount of mental health research • To increase the number of people participating in mental health research studies • Broadening the scope: • Trials at various stages of development • Epidemiological, genetic and imaging studies • A broad view of health services research

  7. To remove some of the barriers to research….

  8. To help you achieve your aims…

  9. help with Why should you contact the Network: (1) Adoptions Service • Aim of the Adoptions Service is to support Study Set up and Completion Recruitment Data collection Regulation Site files / Master files Study documentation Statistical advice User Involvement SMHRN Adoptions Service

  10. help with Why should you contact the Network:(2) Protocol Development Service • Aim of the PDS is to encourage a pipeline of research Focussing and refining the study question Development of the protocol Planning practical aspects of study execution Addressing regulatory requirements Making a power calculation and analysis strategy Identifying funding sources SMHRN Protocol Development Service

  11. Peer Review Why should you contact the Network:(3) Protocol Development Groups • Aim of PDGs is to bring together researchers with a shared interest in specific research questions Funding to support PDG activity Methodological support Focus on producing high quality fundable research proposals Call for Applications for Protocol Development Groups

  12. Supporting the current PDGs

  13. Call for new PDGs • 2010 – 2011 • …..?

  14. Imbalance of resources Recent figures show that mental health research received 6.5% of the total research funding compared with 25% for research for cancer and 15% for neurological diseases. (Fair deal for mental health campaign, Royal College of Psychiatrists)

  15. Cost of brain disorders in Europe* All brain disorders: €386b • Health care costs: €135b • Direct non-medical: €72b • Indirect costs: €178b Mental Disorders inc. dementias €295b Neurological €84b Neurosurgical €7b * Andlin-Sobocki P, Jonsson B et al. 16. Brain research is underfunded

  17. Future directions for the Network (1) • Focus on helping researchers develop their ideas for treatment trials and related studies by strengthening the Protocol Development Service. • Actively encourage the development of PDGs in key areas such as depression (primary and secondary care), substance misuse and developmental disorders.

  18. Future directions for the Network (2) • Work more closely with: • The Mental Health Research Networks in England and Wales • Topic-specific Networks such as the Scottish Primary Care Research Network and the Scottish Dementia Research Network • NHS R&D Departments • Research organisations such as the WTCRFs

  19. Future directions for the Network (3) • Consult with: • Clinicians and researchers • Psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, counsellors, physiotherapists… • Patients, carers and the public • Industry on how the Network can best engage and support them in research.
