Arriving in Plymouth • King Henry VIII declared himself head of Church of England • People were expected to follow him • Group of Separatists decided to settle in Virginia • Pilgrims Separatists: people who wanted to separate from the Church of England and practice Christianity their own way Pilgrim: a person who takes a religious journey

  3. The Mayflower Compact • Sailed for Virginia but winds blew them off course • Arrived in Massachusetts • Called new home Plymouth • Believed they weren’t bound by rules of Virginia Company • Needed rules

  4. The Mayflower Compact • Men signed the Mayflower Compact • Called for a government that would make and follow “just and equal laws.” • Officeholders were elected • First document in which colonists claimed a right to govern themselves

  5. First Thanksgiving • Help from local Native Americans sustained Pilgrims • Squanto brought seeds of native plants and showed them how to plant them • Fall 1621 Pilgrims set aside day to give thanks for their good fortune
