THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE YEAR OF CITIZENSHIP 2005 IN FINLAND AIMS AND OBJECTIVES • developing the policies in schools to a more active direction by giving the pupilsmore opportunities to be heard, to participate and to collaborate • to support the pupils in learning and understanding their rights and duties in the democratic society and learn to exercise them actively in their own lives • strengthening and diversifying the activities of the student councils/unions in schools • supporting the implementation of the cross-curricular themes of active citizenship introduced in the National core curriculum • support the collaboration of the schools and other social bodies like NGO’s
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE YEAR OF CITIZENSHIP 2005 IN FINLAND ACTIVITIES • preparing brochures and other material in Finnish, English and Swedish and submitting them to schools • Opening ceremony in the Finnish Parliament on February 4, 2005 • announcing ”Participatory and Active citizenship in Schools” –competition • training for the principals, teachers responsible for student activities and pupils on a provincial level
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE YEAR OF CITIZENSHIP 2005 IN FINLAND ACTIVITIES • meetings and cooperation between the NBE and the NGO’s • connection with the Development Plan of Student Councils and Youth Participation Project • lectures of EYCE in seminars and meetings, many of them arranged by the Finnish Governements’ Participatory citizenship policy program • a seminar and supplementary training for teachers to increase pupils’ activity by Ministry of Education
