  1. Molten-carbonate fuel Cells for Waterborne APplication www.mc-wap.cetena.it Project coordinator: CETENA S.p.A. – Italian Ship Research Centre www.cetena.it

  2. MC-WAP at a Glance The Consortium Programme:FP6 Joint Call 2004-Hydrogen-1 Coordinator:CETENA Total Budget:17,2 M€ EU funding:9,9 M€ Partners:16 + 1 additional Countries:7 Duration:5 years (2005 to 2010) 3 Research centres 1 Engineering consultant 1 Class society 5 OEMs 5 Universities 1 Shipyard

  3. Project Objectives The main objective of MC-WAP project is to give to the maritime industry a benchmarking based on real-life and real-size tests on board of MCFC performance in terms of efficiency, volumes / weight and costs to be comparable to existing power units, providing a timeline for possible future availability of the fuel cells as a commercial product to be installed on board. • Improvement of MC Fuel CellsandFuel Processing Unitperformanceand relevant components, to allow an efficient, reliable and safe use on board • Best integrationbetween the MC Fuel Cells and the Fuel Processor • Design, construction, installation on board and testing of a150 kWe Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) • Safe, efficient and reliable operation and integration of the APU prototype • Concept design of new merchant/passenger ships lay-out. The aim is to partially replace the traditional Diesel generators withmulti-MW Fuel Cells power plantswith diesel reforming units

  5. Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Selection of diesel oil for system development Requirements definition and concept design of 500 kW APU Long-term test on MCFC-NG plant completed • Desulphurization unit upgraded • FP unit components upgraded • MCFC unit upgraded Final design of 150 kW APU APU installation APU testing phase completed Major Milestones Probable one year extension

  6. MC-WAP project HIGHLIGHTS • APU for marine applications • Development of reformer systems • Fuel Cell system integration • “Full scale” operational demonstration

  7. Components enhancement R&D Fuel Processing Unit Sulphur sequestration (down to 0,1 ppm) Porous burner Fuel dosing and vaporization ATR catalyst … Requirements definition Electrical power profiles Environmental Conditions Ship motions & vibrations Diesel oil MCFC Tests on MCFC-NG plant Small scale bench tests Auxiliaries

  8. Design, construction and installation on board of the APU Endurance/ Performance tests BoP and integration on-board Prototype Development

  9. Interactions with other EU & National projects

  10. Project Perspectives • Valuable first experience with application and test of high power (150 kW) FC APU prototype on board ships • A stepping stone in the difficult way to the expansion of FC Multi-MW systems in maritime sector • A group of European Companies will achieve knowledge and experience like no other in FC application on large merchant and passenger ships • An Italian-born technological platform, developed in the MCFC-NG project, has decided to open itself to a number of European partners • MC-WAP wants to acquire leading position in world’s run to fuel cells marinization

  11. MC-WAP Results after 4 years in brief • SotA in MC-FC rules and in Fuel Cells rules in marine applications • SotA in desulphurisation and fuel reforming in marine applications • Set of data concerning power profiles expected on board and needs by ships’ auxiliary plants • Set of data concerning expected operating conditions on board for the Fuel Cells (motions, vibrations and environmental conditions) • Selection of Diesel Oil for the APU development • Partners agreement on preliminary APU architecture, including FC and FPM schemes • Extensive tests on existing on-shore 500kW Research Plant in Marmara research centre (Turkey) and data analysis • Design and optimisation activities for FCM and FPM • Remarkable volume and weight savings • Final design of target MCFC APU power and architecture • Identification of sites for FCM and FPM development • Contacts and project promotion for the selection of the ship on which to install and test the APU – solution identified for a hired ship, interest expressed by one important ship-owner • Dissemination/Training activities
