what is this thing called culture

Culture of Safety

What is this thing called culture?

Culture is a combination of :

  • Attitudes,
  • Behaviors,
  • Beliefs,
  • Values,
  • Ways of doing things, and
  • Other shared characteristics of a particular group of people.

Culture Can:

  • Socialize newcomers.
  • Define influence.
  • Determine values.

When these criteria are consistently and effectively aimed at accident reduction, a positive culture of safety is created

Our Mission: To Create a Culture of Safety in Madison County

Madison County was designated the 7th Safe Community in the US

March 23, 2010

According to Lloyd Jordison, Madison County Safety Coalition Coordinator, “Being designated as a Safe Community has elevated our credibility with the community and our partners. Since our designation, the opportunity to reach new community partners about injury prevention has increased significantly.”

Our Mission: To create a culture of safety in Madison County, Kentucky

Our Beliefs:

  • We recognize that preventable injuries of all types are a Public Health issue.
  • We recognize that no one entity or institution has the ability or resources to be the sole advocate for injury prevention.
  • We believe that the Community as a whole is better able to address injury prevention issues.
  • We believe that by increasing the awareness of partner activities, we can support each other and reduce duplication, making all our efforts more effective.

In response to tragic deaths that occurred on local highways, the Madison County Health Department recognized injury prevention as a public health issue and developed the Madison County Safety Coalition in 2000. Since the coalition's inception, it has been a leader in injury prevention efforts in our community.
