Donald Davie • in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England • began his education at BarnsleyHogate Grammar school • later attended St. Catharine's College, in Cambridge • taught himself Russian • continued his studies and received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D • was made the first Professor of English at the new University of Essex in 1964 • often wrote on the technique of poetry • Much of his poetry has been compared to that of the traditionalist Philip Larkin

Stephen Crane • he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism • one of the most innovative writers of his generation. • began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16 • left school in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer • He won international acclaim in 1895 for his Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without any battle experience
