  1. Teaching Binary Numbers Using VAK Learning Styles Prepared by Kevin Harrington County Dublin VEC

  2. Why do some students find maths hard? Possible solution: Understanding different Learning Styles VAK Learning Styles Practical workshop: Teaching Binary Numbers using the VAK approach Conclusions Presentation Outline

  3. Many possible reasons: Lack of a complete and concise set of instructions Too much generalisation “Mental Block” Etc. Why do some students find Maths Hard?

  4. One major reason is a “Lack of Motivation” They find the subject ‘boring’ It doesn’t stimulate them One reason for this is that we aren’t teaching the subject in a manner that engages with their “preferred learning style” Why do some students find Maths Hard?

  5. A learning style is “the way in which an individual experiences the world and how that individual processes and integrates new information” Most people have a preferred Learning Style There are many theories related to Learning Styles Understanding Different Learning Styles

  6. The VAK Learning Styles • Visual • Auditory • Kinaesthetic (Movement)

  7. Visual Learners • 2 types: • Visual-linguistic: Like to learn through written language, such as reading and writing tasks • Visual-spatial: Do better with charts, demonstrations, videos and other visual materials.

  8. Auditory Learners • May have difficulty with reading and writing tasks • They often do better in discussions • They enjoy activities such as brainstorming

  9. Kinaesthetic Learners • Do best while touching and moving • Tend to lose concentration if there is little or no external stimulation or movement • Typically like to keep their hands busy – colour highlighters, drawing pictures (doodling)

  10. Implications of Learning Styles • For the greatest impact, ensure that your lesson includes visual, auditory and kinaesthetic teaching and learning strategies

  11. Practical Application – Teaching Binary Numbers • Need 8 volunteers

  12. ASCII – Binary Character Table

  13. Plan your classes to take account of different Learning Styles May require more preparation, but the outcomes will be worth it Conclusion Take Home Message: The way you learn isn’t necessarily the way your students will learn
