  4. New 3D Printer Events • 3D Derby:Students will design a car in SketchupMake, and print it. Then they will test it to improve its speed. • 3D Bridge Design:Students will design a bridge in West Point Bridge Design Then they will draft it in SketchupMake and print it. They will test it to improve its strength.

  7. Design Documents • Students will create a technical document describing the process of creating their project. It will include a research section, specifications of their project, testing and results. • See sample Design Documents on TOT website

  8. Sketchup Basics • Template: Product Design and Woodworking (millimeters) • Axes • Toolbar • Measurement Box

  9. Pick a Project: • Choose to work through either the 3D Derby Project or the Bridge Design Project. • Use the tutorial files and videos online. • Let me know if you need any help.

  10. Checking your Project • You need to have a good design file to get a good print, or even a finished print! • Use the “Printing Project Checklist” • Watch the Car Checking Tutorial Videos

  11. Sample Project with Errors • Open up the “Car with Errors” file under Event Tutorials, and then 3D Printing. • Try to find 3 errors on the car that might lead to a bad print.

  12. Installing New Software • .stl extension for Sketchup • Makerware • We will need both of these programs installed in order to send your files to the 3D printer.

  15. Exporting as a .stlfiletype • Must first install .stl extension in Sketchup • Click on File, then Export STL… • Make sure you select your entire model • Must add .stl to the end of the filename • Check out these tutorial videos

  17. Infill • Probably the easiest way to increase/decrease the weight/strength of your project.

  19. Troubleshooting and Tips • Use Troubleshooting Guide • MakerbotOnline Resources • PLA Printing Guide • Other Tips: • Try to keep filament in bag with desiccate • Don’t wait till the last minute, there will be issues • Don’t change filament when head is on the build platform
