  2. Materials • Shallow Dish or Petri Dish • Water • Paper Clip • Rubber Band(5 cm. in diameter) • Dropper(2) • Vegetable Oil • Liquid Dish Detergent

  3. Procedures • 1. Clean and dry the dish • 2. Fill the dish almost full with water. Dry hands • 3. Being careful not to break the surface, gently place the paper clip on the water. Observe what happens. • 4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 • 5. Gently place the open rubber band on the water • 6. Slowly add oil drop by drop onto the water encircled by the rubber band until that water is covered with a layer of oil. Observe for 15 seconds. • 7. Allow one drop of dish detergent to fall onto the center of the oil layer. Observe for 15 seconds.

  6. Conclusion/Analysis • What was learned from this lab experiment is that it is really difficult to balance a paper clip on the surface of water unlike the rubber band. When the vegetable oil was added the rubber band started to sink. After that, the detergent was added and caused the rubber band to sink completely into the water. What we could have done better is use less vegetable oil and dish detergent.

  7. Conclusion/Analysis Questions • 1. The paper clip kept on slipping into the water, because we weren't able to balance it. When we finally balanced it, it lasted only for 25 seconds. • 2. No, because if the paper clip becomes wet it will have too much weight and start sinking. • 3. The rubber band had a type of oval shape when the oil was added, because the oil was shaping how the rubber bands shape should be. • 4. The dish detergent was following the flow of the layer of oil when it fell apart out of the rubber bands shape.
