  1. Detecting Aircraft Stealth Dakota Henke EECS 725 5/2/2014

  2. Stealth Background • Defining Stealth • Radar, IR, Visual • PyotrUfimtsev4 • EM Reflection • Denys Overholser, LHM5 • “Hopeless Diamond” • 2D Stealth, Computing Power • Plane Configuration • Payload, Fuel, Performance • Radar Absorbing Materials (RAM)1 • Carbonyl Iron (ferrite), Graphite • EM Countermeasures (Not Covered) *Visual Approximation *Visual Approximation

  3. Stealth Aircraft B2 Spirit(RCS 0.1 m2) NG F22 Raptor (RCS 0.0001 m2) LHM F-117 Nighthawk (RCS 0.025 m2) LHM “They say the camera adds 10 lbs, but that’s assuming that the camera isn’t using X-band radiation” – Some engineer, probably 44.5’ x 62’ x 16.7’ *RCS Values are from Head On, X-Band Radar7

  4. Monostatic Detection • Egyptian Research Group, Probability of detection3 • S-Band (larger wavelengths -> Rayleigh Region) • Large Pulse Duration (Possible Intercept) • Smaller PRF (Eclipsing) • Look Angles • Not tracking, just detection • My opinion: Need some luck and better resolution

  5. Multistatic Detection • Same Egyptian Research Group, RCS Modeling2 • F117 Nighthawk • Resonance Region • Changing Angles and Polarization • Aperture Area 2.5 m2 – 7 m2 • RCS 0.025 m2 to .17 m2 • My opinion: Promising, but more difficult to implement (coherence)

  6. IR Detection • RAM vs Metal • Exhaust • Friction w/ Speed • Size/Improvements of Detector • Countermeasures • My opinion: Limited (range), but not as complicated Zikidis, Skondras, Tokas7

  7. Future of Stealth Aircraft6 • Computing power increase = detect faint signatures • Electronically Scanned Arrays improve resolution • Passive System improvement • Physical/Aerospace stealth techniques becoming less effective • Turn to electronic counter-measures • Jobs for EEs!
