  5. Strategic Motivation and Synergies Current Generation Instruments HESS, VERITAS: Sensitivity ~ 1% Crab in 20 – 30 h Erange ~ 100 GeV – 100 TeV Aeff ~ 100,000 m2 Angular resolution ~ 0.1o MAGIC-II: Ethres ~ 25 GeV VERITAS is currently the most sensitive TeV Observatory in the World! UChicago – Founding Member ; Argonne joined 2005

  6. VERITAS TrICE VERITAS: More than 20 refereed publications in the last 2 years. 10. Outline Cosmic Particle Physics/ Astronomy Strategic Motivation and Synergies Opportunities and Competition This Proposal: Development of Telescope Mechanical Structures & Development of Camera DAQ & Triggering Summary

  11. 11.5 Meter SC Mechanical Design – This Proposal ANL (Mech. Structure) UChicago (Camera box) UCLA optics

  12. Technical Advances Needed Current-gen ~500 Pixels ~500 MHz ~10000 Pixels ~1000 MHz Next-gen Recall TrICE (ANL/UChicago Camera Prototype 64-channel, 1GSPS, 12-bit readout modules Self-contained, modular camera planes Order 10k channels

  13. Electronics Design DRS4 • 64-channel prototype board with DRS ASIC • 4 copies of an independent 16-channel daughter board + master control logic • Each board has integrated trigger, calibration and ADC readout • 12bit, 2 us depth at 1 GSPS • Testing now underway This Proposal: • Design of system interface to an active front-end • And connection to a trigger

  14. Outline Cosmic Particle Physics/ Astronomy Strategic Motivation and Synergies Opportunities and Competition This Proposal: Development of Telescope Mechanical Structures & Development of Camera DAQ & Triggering Summary & Future Plans

  15. Summary and Future Plans Complete Conceptual Design of SC Telescope integrating ANL Dish and UChicago Camera Box/Mount; Build a “Mock-up” structure for simple tests and proof of principle. Complete DAQ readout board for one camera module; begin a system conceptual design interfacing camera front-end DAQ to an active front end and a topological like trigger.
