Background Information

Plan for Transitional Assessments • No change to current assessments in 2011-12 • Transitional ELA and mathematics assessments for grades 3-8 and high school in 2012-13 and 2013-14 • Aligned with transitional LCC • Transitional assessments • Will include existing items that best align with CCSS and new field tested items that align with both the LCC and the CCSS • Content focus will change. • Content omitted from CCSS will be discontinued; the emphasis will be on existing content that aligns with CCSS • “Cut scores” and level of difficulty will remain the same. • New CCSS content will not be added until 2014-15.

Field Test Information

Field Test Overview • Field Test Administration: Tuesday through Thursday, March 27-29 • Districts/schools selectoneday to test within the window. • LEAP and iLEAP, Grades 3-8 students • Purpose: to generate new items for LEAP and iLEAP that will more closely align with the CCSS and the new PARCC assessments scheduled to be implemented in 2014-2015 • Three Sessions: one ELA (writing only); two Math • Approximately2 hours to administer the sessions • Makeup testing is not required.

Expectations Teachers should • emphasize the importance of the field test to students • prepare students for the field test by making them aware of what to expect on the field test Teachers should not • be expected to teach new material or a new approach to prepare students for the field test, e.g., the new writing prompt Test administrators should • treat the field test administration like the operational test, especially ensuring that students have sufficient time • follow all directions in the administration manual

Primary Field Test Differences • Test booklets are consumable. • Students respond directly in the test booklet. • All student information must be hand coded. • There are multiple forms of each test. • Four forms for each iLEAP test • Eight forms for each LEAP test • Each school administers one form. • Writer’s Checklists and Mathematics Reference Sheets are considered secure and must be returned to DRC.

English Language Arts

What’s New for ELA? New Writing Prompt • Focuses on akey instructional shift in CCSS: writing in response to reading • Evidence-based writing; must use the text in written response • Includes one or two passages • more emphasis on informational text • more testing time to allow for reading text • Contains new format • Directions, text (passages), writing prompt • The writing prompt directs the student to respond to the subject of the text (passage or passages) using information from the text to support his or her response. • Revised Writer’s Checklist

Directions Directions: Read the passage [or passages, story, etc.] about __________. As you read the passage(s), think about ______________. Then use the passage(s) to help you write a well-organized composition of two or more paragraphs [or at least three paragraphs or a well-organized multiparagraph composition]. • Introduces the passage(s) • Introduces the task

ReadingText • One or two passages, depending on content and writing topic • Length will vary by grade level • Includes grade-level vocabulary • All students will be given dictionaries and thesauruses. • Includes title of passage/story • Will appear in a box • Will ONLYbe read aloud to students with TestsRead Aloud accommodation

Writing Topic Writing Topic As you write, follow the suggestions below: • Your composition should have at least two paragraphs. • Be sure your composition has a beginning, a middle, and an end. • Use details from the passage(s) and include enough information so your teacher will understand your response…. • Identifies the form of the response, the audience, and all parts of the task • Includes suggestions for writing specific to the grade level and prompt

Writer’s Checklists • Two for iLEAP • One for grade 3 • One for grades 5, 6, and 7 • One for LEAP, grades 4 and 8 • New language • Reminds students to read the prompt carefully and to respond to all parts • Reminds students to use examples/details from the passage(s) • Includes slight differences in the style language

Mathematics

Transitional Assessments (Mathematics) • Adjust LEAP and iLEAP by using existing items that best align with CCSS • “Cut scores” and level of difficulty will remain the same. • Same number of items per form • Omit content that will be discontinued, emphasizing existing content that aligns with CCSS. • Assessments will be grade-level specific. • Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) will no longer be used in the math iLEAP. • Content focus will change.

Grade 3 Field Test • Number of forms: 4 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 10 • 6 no-calculator items and 4 calculator items • Ruler • Emphasis will be Multiplication and Division and Number.

Grade 4 Field Test • Number of forms: 8 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 10 • 6 no-calculator items and 4 calculator items • Mathematics Reference Sheet • Emphasis will be Number and Operations.

Grade 5 Field Test • Number of forms: 4 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 15 • 9 no-calculator items and 6 calculator items • Ruler • Emphasis will be Fractions and Number and Operations.

Grade 6 Field Test • Number of forms: 4 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 13 • 7 no-calculator items and 6 calculator items • Mathematics Reference Sheet • Emphasis will be Number System.

Grade 7 Field Test • Number of forms: 4 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 18 • 9 no-calculator items and 9 calculator items • Mathematics Reference Sheet • Emphasis will be Number System and Ratio, Proportion, and Algebra.

Grade 8 Field Test • Number of forms: 8 • Each school will only administer 1 form of the field test. • Number of multiple-choice items per form: 15 • 7 no-calculator items and 8 calculator items • Mathematics Reference Sheet • Emphasis will be Ratio, Proportion, and Algebra and Measurement, Data, and Geometry.
