Why Deconstruct the 2008 APB Exam? • The Loud Refrain from the APSI was … • We have difficulty “covering the content” • We have difficulty making the connection between lab data and the content The Proposed Solution… • We need to focus on the essential content and let the rest go • Teaching lab in PD doesn’t seem to yield results • Keep doing the labs, you can only get better through experience • We’ll spend an entire SSS looking at essential data and making the connections

  5. Objective 1:Sort 100 MCQ into thethree sub categories • Molecules and Cells = M&C • Heredity and Evolution = H&E • Organisms and Populations = O&P • Work in pairs to Identify (ID) the subcategory for a set of 5 – 10 MCQ • Share our ideas and catalog the results

  6. Objective 2:Uncover the essential concept • Join me in the human Venn Diagram • Working in each Sub category let’s uncover the following… • The Essential Concept • The Correct Answer • The Main Distracter If we all agree, then we’ll move on…if we don’t agree well…

  7. Objective 3:Clearing the F.O.G. • I think there are three types of questions on any AP Exam… • F. = “Flag for follow up” (long stem, tricky distracters, shaky on content) • O. = OMG! (something you’ve never seen before) • G. = Good to go (straight forward, “basic” question. Our students should be confident on these questions) • Let’s use our plates to uncover the F. O. G. • Let’s teach the G and F, and let the O go
