Pinocchio The cat and the fox • At the beginning of the story, the fox and the cat seem quite nice and friendly • When they hear that Pinocchio has five gold pieces, they become vicious and brutal • The fox proposes to double Pinocchio’s gold pieces and offers him to go to the City of Simple Simons • If Pinocchio buries his money in the ground and water it in the Field of Wonders, one day later he will find a tree loaded with gold pieces • Disguised as the Assassins, they try to stab and to hang Pinocchio to the branch of a big oak Dr. Montoneri

  14. Conclusion • Pinocchio, in addition to a children's tale, is a novel of education, with values expressed through allegory • One is that they mirror the values of the middle class of the 19th century, in particular Italy as it became a nation state • Steven Spielberg's film, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), based on a Stanley Kubrick project that was cut short by Kubrick's death, recasts the Pinocchio theme, in which an android with emotions longs to become a real boy Dr. Montoneri
