    1. The Circuit Francisco Jiménez

    3. Themes The major theme of the story seems to be that there is inherent instability in people’s lives. Also that change is a constant thing and that one should never become too content with the status quo. A minor theme seems to be the loneliness that everyone undergoes in life. And that while people may for a moment intrude upon that loneliness, it is all temporary.

    4. The Goal The author seems to be trying to impart the wisdom that nothing in life is permanent. Except for change that is. He also seems to be trying to say that life has many ups and downs, but the downs always seem to out weight the ups.

    5. Method Used This story is told from as a detached autobiography. The narrator is the main character. Given as first person account. Practical tone of language. The language also suggests the family's Mexican heritage.

    6. Beginnings and Ends The story starts at Mr. Ito’s strawberry farm. Ends at Mr. Sullivan’s farm. This stresses the family’s dependence on the fact that farm owners need hired labor. Labor that Panchito’s family provides.

    7. Panchito’s Transformation Starts the story sad because of the family’s move. During the course of the story he remains sad and disappointed. Until… He begins school and finds a friend in the form of Mr. Lema. But it is supposed that at the end of the story he returns to a sad state after he finds that the family is moving again. After the story as the narrator looks back he sees he had become accustomed to that way of life. But it still never made the moves any easier for him. And now it is not as big a deal looking back on it.

    8. Symbols The growing and dying of the crops symbolizes Panchito’s experiences. The constant moving symbolizes the instability of Panchito’s life. The car symbolizes the instability of the entire family. The shack and garage that the family lives in symbolizes the decay that is found in the family’s life. The water symbolizes that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The pot can symbolize that while the family undergoes hardships they can make the family stronger or more desirable.

    9. The Allusion The title of the story alludes to the fact that life is circular. It also so alludes to the fact that at each “switch” it is only a matter of time until it is flipped.

    10. Reactions Our reaction to the story is that it is sad that Panchito loses so much for the sake of his family. It does not seem right that he must sacrifice so much. Also, that life is a struggle. And that one must bask in the good while they can.

    11. End Results The author seems to fulfill his goal. One realizes after reading the story that change is inescapable and affects us all. Also, one sees that it is easy to find the bad in life and how it can out weight the good.

    12. And Now… Are there any questions? (Thank you for listening, and any comments are welcome.)
