  8. Investigation: Select 1 small group of counters. Count the counters in the group. Take away a group of counters. Count the number of counters remaining. OR Select 2 numbers to make 1 small group of counters and take away a group of the other number. Think about which number you could make a group of, that would give you enough to take away of group of the other number. Record a number sentence to describe the group you are starting with to take away the other group. Make 1 group. Record your group. Take away the other number of counters. Problem Solving In a soccer game, the Blues scored 5 goals and the Reds scored 2 goals. How many more goals did the Blues score? Problem Solving There were 5 children on the bus. 3 children got off. How many children on the bus? Problem Solving This room has 7 chairs. 3 children sit on the chairs. How many chairs have no one sitting on them?   11. Investigation: Sit with a friend. Have a tower of 20 or 30 blocks. Take turns to flip 1 card and take the number of blocks from the tower. Did you take away a group of blocks? Continue playing until all counters have been taken. Reflection: How do we start with one group and take a group away from it? Early Counting and Grouping 14

  13. Investigation: Sit with a friend. Have a 10 Frame Bus. One child places some counters on the bus filling from the top row first to act as children, explaining 'There are ... children on the bus'. The second child takes away some counters as children, explaining '... children got off the bus'.
