CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking CAM practice in Europe • 145,000 MDs with additional CAM qualification • > 160,000 non-medical CAM practitioners (NMQPs) • Mostly provided by MDs: • acupuncture 80,000 MDs (also 16,000 NMQPs) • homeopathic medicine 45,000 MDs (also 4,500 NMQPs) • naturopathic medicine 15,000 MDs • anthroposophic medicine 4,500 MDs • neural therapy 1,500 MDs • Mostly provided by NMQPs: • herbalism, manual therapies (osteopathy, chiropractic), reflexology, shiatsu, yoga, tai chi & qigong. CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking Representing dual-trained physicians • After graduation as an MD, have specialised in one or more CAM modalities • Have the authority and competence to decide on the most appropriate treatment: either conventional or CAM or both. • Broad scope includes awareness of the need for conventional medical diagnosis, prognosis and treatments. • Integrate CAM into patient care within the context of general medical practice, conventional specialist practice or may practise CAM full-time.

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking Joint Working Agreement • Mutual advantage in several ways: • saving funds through sharing costs • increasing the power and visibility of separate organisations, • achieving a shared aim • sharing knowledge and contacts. • All participating organisations pay for facilities or support used by the collaboration: • costs of the Liaison Office in Brussels • anything else agreed on by the participating organisations.   • Last quarter of each year: a priority list for the next year.

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking EUROCAM’s overarching objective To achieve EU level recognition of the actual effective healthcare contribution of CAM as a stepping stone to equitable availability, accessibility and affordability, together with more appropriate regulation and integration of practice at both national and European level.

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking EUROCAM’s main objectives • Awareness by EU and national authorities of the considerable demand for CAM by citizens • Full availability of CAM medicinal products. • Freedom of establishment of CAM health professionals, freedom to provide CAM treatment services and mutual recognition of their professional qualifications between the EU Member States

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking Benefits of CAM forhealthcare systems CAM can contribute to multiple European health priorities such as • chronic disease management • patient safety • health promotion • health information • healthy ageing • reducing healthcare costs and health inequalities • the future of the health workforce.

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking Benefits of CAM forhealthcare systems CAM is aimed at restoring the patients’ own natural systems for fighting disease and maintaining health and is therefore highly relevant in chronic disease management. • reducing the need of high-impact medical interventions and conventional prescription drugs and the long-term dependency on them. • reducing the need of antibiotics, thus reducing the problem of antimicrobial resistance. • high patient satisfaction, increased quality of life, and reduction of absenteeism. • mostly low-cost treatment and helps reduce the need for high-cost interventions • safe treatment with hardly any adverse effects. • increasing evidence for its effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking EUROCAM Projects • Recurrent meetings with Directorate-General Health & Food Safety (DG SANTE), and incidental meetings with other DGs • DG SANTE wants the CAM community to speak with one voice • Recurrent organisation (with MEPs) of CAM Interest Group meetings at the European Parliament. • All-day conference in 2012 and 2016(?)

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking CAM Interest Group meetings • Meetings at the European Parliament hosted by one of the co-chairs of the CAM Interest Group, an informal group of members of the European Parliament with a special interest in CAM. • Aims:(a) putting and keeping CAM on the EU policy agenda (b) activating a forum for discussion and action(c) promoting awareness of CAM and the value of a more holistic approach to health. • Attendees: • MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) • European Commission officials • Representatives of the CAM stakeholders (patients, healthcare professionals and manufacturers) and other health NGOs

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking CAM Interest Group meetings • Ensuring the availability of CAM medicinal products for the benefit of EU citizens (2015) • CAM: Reducing the need for antibiotics (2014) • CAM: An investment in health (2013) • Cancer and the contribution of CAM (2012) • The need for research into health promotion and CAM (2011) • Healthy ageing, chronic disease management and the potential contribution of CAM in these areas (2011) • EU Directives are not working for products used in CAM (2010)

CAMDOC – EUROCAM – EU Networking Conference “CAM – Innovation and Added Value for the European Healthcare” - October 2012 • Funded by the European Commission, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and some other sponsors. • 100 attendees: members of the European Parliament, health NGO delegates, health professionals, patients and policy makers. • EUROCAM presented the booklet "Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Current status and potential in European healthcare”. • EUROCAM presented a call for action addressed to the European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU Member States.
